Zoltan Chivay is a dwarf, a soldier of fortune and a loyal friend of Geralt and Dandelion. He runs the Rosemary and Thyme in Novigrad together with Dandelion. Geralt finds him there while searching for the missing bard. Zoltan then helps rescue Dandelion and asks Geralt's help with a debt of his own.
Lore
Zoltan is a veteran of the Battle of Brenna. He is a born optimist and always ready to help others. He loves rough drinks and rougher songs, and he is a master gwent player.
Zoltan became fast friends with Geralt and Dandelion years ago. The two ran into him in war-torn Riverdell, where he was leading a band of his own. Their paths crossed many times after that, and the three became inseparable companions in good times and bad. At the start of the story, Zoltan and Dandelion are in business together, running a Novigrad tavern called the Rosemary and Thyme.
Story
Geralt comes to the Rosemary and Thyme looking for Dandelion, who has vanished. He finds Zoltan throwing two ruffians out of the place. Zoltan has just come back from a long journey and knows nothing of Dandelion's fate. He helps Geralt search the tavern. They find Dandelion's planner, with notes on the women he met before he vanished. The two friends split the names between them and set out into the city.
Dandelion has been captured, and he is to be taken to the prison of Oxenfurt for execution. Zoltan sets up an ambush on the prison transport. By saving Dandelion from the transport, he proves once again that he never abandons a friend in need.
Zoltan soon needs help in return. He borrowed money from one of the Novigrad mob bosses and made some dangerous enemies. He plans to pay off the debt by collecting three rare gwent cards: Fringilla Vigo, Isengrim and Natalis. In the cutthroat gwent circles of Novigrad, the plan could never work without Geralt's help. This is the quest A Dangerous Game.
Depending on earlier choices, Zoltan also lends a hand when Geralt breaks into the prison of Deireadh in the quest The Great Escape.
Relationships
Dandelion is Zoltan's dear friend and business partner. Geralt is an old friend who has stood by him many times.
