Carter Smith is an Arasaka computer specialist and the assistant of a Corpo V. He is good at his work but dislikes working for Arasaka, finding its methods unethical. His attempt to do the right thing sets off the purge that ends V's corporate career.

Biography

The Assistant

Carter works in Arasaka's counter-intelligence division in Night City, run by Arthur Jenkins. His mother, Mary, is very proud of his success, but Carter is disgusted by what Jenkins asks of his people.

The Warning

Carter learns of Jenkins's plan to have Susan Abernathy killed. Believing he should do what any decent person would, he warns her. Abernathy's agents then purge the whole counter-intelligence division, and despite his warning, Carter is a target too.
