Following the River is the last side job of River Ward's storyline, after The Hunt. River invites V to a family dinner at his sister Joss's trailer in the Badlands to celebrate the rescue of Randy. After the meal, River takes V up a water tower to watch the stars, and a feminine V can start a romance with him there.

Story

A Family Dinner

Johnny cannot believe it. In the journal he says the Peter Pan case is closed and V never has to see this cop again. He understands that they went through fire together and V wants to celebrate, but a family dinner? He would rather find a dive bar, down ten tequilas and smash a bottle over some corporate face.

V calls River and agrees to dinner at Joss's. In the evening, River is cooking jambalaya outside. V can ask about Randy and about revenge on Peter Pan, but River changes the subject and sends V for rice from the kitchen, where V can talk with Joss. Back outside, V can stir the soy meat.

The Kids

River's niece and nephew want to play an AR combat game. V puts on the gear and plays a round with them, and can let the kids win by killing fewer targets. Then everyone sits down to eat. Joss openly says that River likes V, much to his embarrassment.

The Water Tower

To escape the awkward moment, River invites V to a nearby water tower. They find a way through the fence, open the gate and climb to the top. River gives V his revolver, saying he has carried it too long, as thanks for V's help. They share a drink, and a feminine V can choose to romance him or stay friends.

Choices

River's Romance

A romance needs a feminine V who saved Randy in The Hunt and told River not to take revenge. On the tower, show interest in him and kiss him when given the chance. There are two moments to do so. The next morning, when he asks about what happened, say V feels good around him and kiss him again.

Rewards

Completing Following the River rewards Crash, Big Trouble In Heywood AR game box memorabilia and River's tank top (romance only).

River gives V his Iconic revolver Crash. The "Big Trouble in Heywood" memorabilia is added to V's apartment, and the trailer park opens as a place to stay. A romanced V can also get River's tank top.
