Jason Duval is one of the two protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI. He is a former soldier who works for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. His partner in crime across Leonida is Lucia Caminos. Together the pair get caught up in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. Jason longs for a quiet and easy life, yet trouble keeps finding him. Meeting Lucia could turn out to be the best or the worst thing in his life.
Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder.
Story
Jason grew up surrounded by grifters and crooks. As a young man he joined the Army to leave his troubled teenage years behind. The Army did not set him on a different path for long. He ended up back in the Leonida Keys, doing the work he knows best. That work means running drugs for local smugglers.
The veteran smuggler Brian Heder lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties. In return, Jason helps Brian with local shakedowns and collects money from other tenants. Brian sometimes pulls up at the house to push Jason about that work. Jason spends time repairing the roof of his own house. Brian would rather see him out collecting rent.
When Lucia walks out of the Leonida Penitentiary, Jason is the one who drives there to collect her. The two quickly rekindle their romance and share his home. Soon they are pulling off robberies together across Leonida. One of their targets is a diner, which they rob together. Then an easy score goes badly wrong for the couple. The fallout drags them into a conspiracy that reaches across the whole state. From then on, Jason and Lucia must lean on each other more than ever to survive.
Jason takes on work for several of the state's criminals. He and Lucia make a pick-up for the Vice City mogul Boobie Ike. The pair walk through gang territory to reach a dealer named Raymond. Raymond runs a drug lab inside a rundown apartment building. On the way in, Jason stops to pet a dog. During the deal, Raymond's partner Ernesto phones to warn that a police task force is coming. Ernesto has betrayed Raymond to the police. Officers led by Mendez storm the building and open fire. Mendez shoots one dealer in the head even after the man drops his gun. Jason and Lucia already know who Mendez is. The pair fight their way through the hallways, covering each other as they go. They duck into an apartment and escape with Boobie's goods still in hand.
Back at their apartment, Jason and Lucia get ready for a party at Brian's. Jason grabs a beer from the fridge and watches television while Lucia picks an outfit. He worries about being late and tries to hurry her along. The adverts on screen include one for an antidepressant and one for a giant fast food sandwich. The couple then drive to the party in a convertible with the roof down.
Brian hosts the gathering at a rooftop bar, with his wife Lori beside him. The talk brings back a job that went wrong, when police caught and questioned the pair. Brian has a shady job for that night, but the client wants only one of them. Lucia volunteers for the job and leaves, while Jason stays behind. Jason and Brian step out onto the balcony, share a cigar and talk about crime.
The job turns into a getaway for the bank robber Raul Bautista. Jason and Lucia pick Raul up in the middle of a police chase. Jason climbs into the back seat and shoots at the police behind them. Lucia drives, and Raul asks her whether she is a professional. Once they are clear, the three burn the getaway car and switch to a van. Before they part, Raul tells the pair to keep their phones on. Jason and Lucia wonder whether they now belong to Raul's crew. Later the pair return to Bayside and take a look around.
The couple also take a job guarding Andrés de León, a media executive from Megamundo. Valentina hires them to protect him on his behalf. They meet Andrés at the airport, where he greets them with a hug. Jason and Lucia then drive him to the opening of Megamundo's new headquarters in America. A security guard takes Lucia's guns before the party. Instead of giving a speech, Andrés slips away to take cocaine with his friends. Then an armed gang storms the building. Jason takes cover and fights back with his pistol, slowing time to line up his shots. He sets off a distraction so that Lucia can slip away. The two keep in touch by text message throughout the attack.
Jason's crimes grow from drug trafficking to bank robbery. Hard material circumstances push him towards that life. It stays open whether he turns to crime out of need or out of nature.
Relationships
Lucia Caminos is Jason's partner in crime across Leonida. Their bond can grow into a romance or stay a working partnership. Either way, the two remain partners in crime and keep covering each other. How close they become shapes the way their story plays out. Jason and Lucia sometimes walk hand in hand.
Brian Heder is Jason's landlord and his boss in the drug trade. Brian's wife, Lori, invites Jason over for her sangria every so often.
Cal Hampton is Jason's close friend and regular drinking partner. The two of them drink beer and shoot pool together at a local bar. Cal is content with a small life, while Jason has much bigger plans.
Raul Bautista acts as an older mentor who draws Jason and Lucia into bigger heists. Boobie Ike sends the couple on jobs in Vice City. Jason also spends time with Dre'Quan Priest, and the two look at a phone together.
Location
Jason lives in the Leonida Keys, a tropical island chain near Vice City. Life in the Keys is relaxed rather than flashy. The bars are busy, the dress code is casual and the deck chairs are always out. Some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in America lie right on the doorstep. Jason's home is a beachfront property owned by Brian Heder. That house serves as Jason's safehouse in the Keys.
