Clay is one of the three building materials added by Hearthfire, alongside quarried stone and sawn logs. It is mined from clay deposits, which sit near rivers and close to stone quarries, and every wall and foundation of a player built house needs it.

Acquisition

Clay deposits behave nothing like an ore vein. They never run out, and each three swings of a pickaxe yields four samples rather than one. A single deposit will therefore supply an entire house if you have the patience.

Deposits are found around each of the three building plots, so you rarely have to carry clay far.

Merchants

Once you have made a follower your steward, they will supply clay on request, which removes the mining entirely. General goods merchants and Khajiit traders also stock building materials, though they can take up to thirty days to restock.

Building materials are consumed at the carpenter's workbench rather than at a forge, and none of them raise Smithing.

Yield

Hearthfire deposits are unlimited, unlike ore.
