Sawn Logs are the timber for a player built house, and the strangest item in the Hearthfire set: they weigh nothing, they are worth nothing, and they never appear in your inventory at all. The game tracks them separately, which is why you cannot drop or sell them.
Acquisition
Wood mills sell them, and at certain mills they can be taken for free once you have done the owner a favour or bought the mill outright. Your steward will also supply them on request, which is the route most players end up taking.
Notes
Because sawn logs are not real inventory items, there is no icon for them in the game and no way to check how many you hold except at the drafting table. That is deliberate: they exist only as a counter for the housebuilding system.
Building materials are consumed at the carpenter's workbench rather than at a forge, and none of them raise Smithing.
