Damien de la Tour is the captain of the Ducal Guard of Toussaint. He serves Duchess Anna Henrietta and is fiercely devoted to her. Geralt meets him at the court in Beauclair while hunting the Beast in Blood and Wine.
Lore
Damien is utterly devoted to his post and worships the ground the duchess walks on. He is very likely in love with her. He carries out her orders, and he is also her close companion and a sympathetic ear.
Damien comes across as a typical soldier. When he first sees Geralt, he decides at once that he must prove who is the better man. Geralt accepts the challenge with cool disdain and makes himself another enemy.
Story
In Wine is Sacred, Damien rides with the duchess and Geralt to the ducal vineyard of Castel Ravello. He offers some well-worn tricks for killing vampires, which Geralt can wave away. He commands the guardsmen at the ambush in the port district. Afterwards, he warns Geralt that there is now a bounty on his head. He also reports that the Cintrian was seen with the singer Cecilia Bellante at the Mandragora club.
In Capture the Castle, Damien and his guardsmen help Geralt storm Dun Tynne on the duchess's orders. He holds the briefing after midnight at the mill where Dettlaff killed Count de la Croix.
In The Night of Long Fangs, Dettlaff's vampires overrun Beauclair. Geralt finds Damien's unit hiding in a bank on the main square and teaches the soldiers how to kill vampires. Damien then reveals that the duchess has taken Syanna to the palace playroom.
Fighting side by side changes Damien's view of the witcher. He decides that the White Wolf is a decent fellow who only wants to help. Once Geralt saves Beauclair from the Beast, the two become friends in their own gruff way.
Damien's fate turns on Syanna's. If Syanna died at Dettlaff's hands, Damien mourns deeply because his duchess grieves. In Burlap is the New Stripe, he releases Geralt from prison with poor grace once Dandelion wins the witcher's freedom. In his heart, Damien blames Geralt for what happened. If Syanna kills her sister in Pomp and Strange Circumstance, Damien shoots Syanna in the throat with a crossbow bolt. He blames himself above all and wants to fall on his sword. Only the thought that his duchess would never forgive him stops him. He mourns her for many years, and his friendship with Geralt dies with her.
Relationships
Anna Henrietta is the center of Damien's life. He serves her, guards her and quietly loves her. Geralt goes from rival to friend, though tragedy at court can end that friendship.
