Anna Henrietta is the Duchess of Toussaint, a human ruler loved by her subjects. Those who know her well call her Anarietta. She summons Geralt to Toussaint to hunt the Beast of Beauclair. She is one of the central figures of the Blood and Wine story.

Lore

Anna Henrietta rules Toussaint, a duchy that is a vassal of the Nilfgaardian Empire. Her subjects truly admire her. She is the widow of the late Duke Raymund. She was also once the lover of a very famous artist who prefers to stay anonymous.

Anna Henrietta first met Geralt of Rivia a few years before the events of the game. Geralt was then passing through Toussaint with a band of friends. When a mysterious Beast began to kill her courtiers, she knew exactly whom to call.

Anna Henrietta has a sister, Sylvia Anna, known as Syanna. Syanna was banished from the court many years ago. When the two girls were children, the mage Artorius Vigo made a fairy tale land for them inside the palace playroom.

The court of Beauclair is a place of cutting remarks, half truths and bald lies. The duchess is an unchallenged master of this courtly warfare. She is also famous for her fiery temper.

Story

Anna Henrietta's contract reaches Geralt through her knights Palmerin de Launfal and Milton de Peyrac-Peyran. In The Beast of Toussaint, Geralt finds her at a knights' tourney outside Beauclair. Together they work out that Milton is likely the Beast's next victim. They race through the palace gardens, where a game of Hunt the Hare is under way. The duchess and the witcher break the game's rules to win the clues faster. They find Milton in a greenhouse, but he is already dead, and the killer flees.

In Wine is Sacred, Geralt reports that the Beast is a vampire. Anna Henrietta learns that it has escaped and threatened her sister's life. She flies into a rage and orders Geralt to bring her Dettlaff's head on a silver platter. Geralt persuades her to let him first find whoever controls the vampire. The trail leads to Sangreal, a wine served only at the Ducal Palace. The duchess and Captain Damien de la Tour ride with Geralt to the ducal vineyard of Castel Ravello. There she searches the wine cellar with him.

In The Man from Cintra, the duchess and Geralt attend a soiree of the Mandragora club in masks. She helps him blend in among the artists of Beauclair, where her sharp tongue is a weapon. The thief they hunt tried to steal a jewel that once belonged to Syanna. The duchess suspects her sister may be at Dun Tynne and orders Geralt to find her. The evening ends with the duchess sharing a table with Geralt and several higher vampires. Unknown to her, one of them is the Beast himself.

In Capture the Castle, the duchess sends Damien and the ducal guard to help storm Dun Tynne. Syanna turns out to be the mind behind the murders. Anna Henrietta decides to keep her sister safe in the palace and to try Roderick, the lord of the castle, for treason. When Dettlaff unleashes his vampires on Beauclair in The Night of Long Fangs, she again demands his head.

In Pomp and Strange Circumstance, she awards Geralt the Vitis Vinifera, Toussaint's highest honor. She also pays for a new outfit so he can attend the ceremony. Syanna then faces her accusers, and Geralt's earlier choices decide the duchess's fate. If Geralt convinced Syanna to forgive her sister, the two argue in public and make peace. If he did not, Syanna pretends to reconcile and drives a hairpin through her sister's heart. Toussaint then keeps a Week of Memory every year, with music silenced and dark curtains in every home. Those fond of her in the far North are said to mourn her too. If Syanna died earlier at Dettlaff's hands, the duchess turns against Geralt instead. In Burlap is the New Stripe, she has him thrown into Toussaint Prison. Dandelion rides to Toussaint and talks her into setting Geralt free. Geralt is lucky to leave the duchy with his head.

Relationships

Syanna is Anna Henrietta's sister, banished from court in her youth. Syanna planned five murders to avenge that banishment. Her own sister was the last name on the list.

Damien de la Tour, the captain of the Ducal Guard, carries out her orders and serves as her close confidant. Geralt is the witcher she trusts to end the Beast's killings.
