Griffin Steel Sword is the Basic tier of the Griffin (Griffin School) steel sword, witcher gear from the base game. It deals 119-145 damage at level 11 and gives +5% sign intensity. Its diagram lies on a skeleton at Hindhold in Velen. It is an early-game blade.
Griffin gear leans on sign intensity, and the set bonuses reward casting signs, so this sword suits a signs build. It also gives +5% bonus experience from humans and nonhumans and has 1 rune slot.
Set Bonus
The Griffin set is medium armor. It has five tiers: Basic at level 11, Enhanced at 18, Superior at 26, Mastercrafted at 34 and Grandmaster at 40. The 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses come from Grandmaster pieces worn as a school set. 3 pieces: after a sign cast in standard mode with stamina, the next sign cast within 3 seconds costs no stamina. 6 pieces: Yrden traps are 40% larger, and inside the trap stamina regeneration rises by 5 per second, sign intensity rises by 100% and damage taken drops by 20%.
How to Get Griffin Steel Sword
- Start Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear. Edwin Greloff, the armorer in Midcopse, sells the first and second maps. The diagram can also be collected without the quest.
- Go to Hindhold and loot the diagram from the skeleton, next to Balstick's letter.
- A journeyman blacksmith crafts the sword.
Griffin Steel Sword Map Location and Quest Guide
The pin marks Hindhold, a ruined fort in Velen. The Griffin Steel Sword diagram lies on a skeleton behind a wooden door at the top of the fort, with Balstick's letter. It turns up during Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear, and a journeyman blacksmith crafts the sword from it.
- Start Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear by finding any of its diagrams, or by buying one of Edwin Greloff's maps from the armorer in Midcopse.
- Travel to Hindhold and kill the endrega workers and warriors on the way up.
- Climb the ladders and wooden platforms to the harpy nest at the top, killing the harpies.
- Go through the wooden door up there. Loot the crate and read Witcher George's confession.
- Loot the skeleton for Balstick's letter and the steel sword diagram.

Notes
In NG+ the diagram makes Legendary Griffin Steel Sword instead. It needs level 11 plus the NG+ starting level, deals 126.4-154.4 damage at level 12 and gives +21% sign intensity, +25% crit damage and +5% crit chance, with 3 rune slots.
