Comrade Red is a reported crime on a hilltop north of the trailer park in Red Peaks, in the Badlands. An abandoned trailer sits above an underground bunker, guarded by a single turret. Inside are two dead Soviet agents. They were sent to spy on Chinese dealings with Arasaka, and the Chinese were ready for them.
Story
A Spy Story
The journal calls it a good spy story: Soviets in the American desert. Anyone who disagrees should get new ears, then check out the stash.
Orders from Misha
A message from Mikhail Akulov to the netrunner Shelma sets out her task. With great affection for the Soviet cause, he reminds her what to do. She is to track Chinese moves in the Net, learn how far their talks with Arasaka have gone, and map their strong and weak points. She is also to act as a smoke screen for his own work in town. He asks her not to get caught, and invites her to one of his parties at his dacha when she returns. Shelma replies that she understands.
Chill the Body
On top of the trailer, V finds Valentin Krylov and his last chat with Shelma. She was jacked in when the Chinese blocked her. They had known she was coming. She could not jack out, and her body was heating up. She told Valentin to get out of the basement, using the code 1011, and run to the generator to put the air conditioning on full. The generator was failing. Last, she begged him to call Akulov for help, though they had been told never to contact him.
