The Ash of War: Thops's Barrier is an Ash of War in Elden Ring that grants the Magic affinity and the Thops's Barrier skill. It can be picked up early in a run.
Thops's Barrier swings the shield to raise a magical forcefield that deflects incoming sorceries and incantations. It also works like a regular parry against melee attacks, opening enemies to a critical hit. It costs no FP, so it can be used freely against casters and spell-heavy bosses. It suits shield users fighting sorcerers, invaders and magic-using enemies.
Stats
It grants the Magic affinity and a Whetblade can switch it to Standard, Keen, Heavy, Quality or Cold. The skill costs no FP. It fits Small Shield and Medium Shield.
How to Get Ash of War: Thops's Barrier Guide
- Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab at the Church of Irith in Liurnia of the Lakes.
- The scarab appears only after giving Sorcerer Thops the spare Academy Glintstone Key found in the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and the area must be reloaded after handing it over.
- Once obtained, it can be duplicated by trading Lost Ashes of War to Smithing Master Hewg at the Roundtable Hold.

Skill
The spell deflection window is short, so the barrier should be raised just as a spell arrives. It can deflect several spells in one use. Deflected spells, especially explosive ones, can still cause damage nearby, so dodging remains safer against large blasts.
