Patches is a dungeon boss in Elden Ring.

Patches is a scheming Tarnished who runs a band of thieves out of Murkwater Cave in Limgrave. He springs his ambush when the treasure chest in his den is opened. Halfway through the fight he drops behind his shield and begs for mercy. Sparing him turns him into a merchant who reappears across the Lands Between.

Lore

Patches is a crafty man in plain leather armor who fights with a spear and a large shield. He accuses intruders of theft while he robs them himself.

He calls himself Patches the Untethered, a free-spirited wanderer with a taste for tricks. The bandits he leads were once foot soldiers of a defeated army.

Later he joins the Recusants of Volcano Manor in the service of Lady Tanith, always looking for an easier target and someone else to do the hard work.

Where to find Patches Location?

Phases

  • Phase 1: Patches attacks with spear thrusts, leaps and kicks.
  • Phase 2: At about half health he surrenders behind his shield, and the fight ends if the attack stops.

Attacks

  • Spraymist Cloud: he drinks a vial and spits a cloud that hides him and weakens attacks; step to the side and circle behind him.
  • Spear Thrusts: quick jabs, often a triple thrust behind his shield; strafe left or right and strike after the last thrust.
  • Jumping Thrust: he leaps and stabs downward; roll left, right or forward.
  • Shield Kick: he kicks a raised shield to break the guard; avoid holding the shield up for long.

Tactics

  1. Decide before the fight whether to spare him, since killing him closes his shop for the playthrough.
  2. Circle behind him when he spits the cloud and land a backstab.
  3. Strafe around his spear thrusts and punish the pause after each one.
  4. Stop attacking the moment he surrenders to accept it.
  5. Use a light, fast weapon; his health is low and he yields early.

Best Builds

Light weapon with strafing

Quick weapons fit between his slow thrusts, and his low health needs little burst damage.

Backstab play

His cloud attack leaves a clear path behind him for a critical hit.

Drops

Defeating it grants 800 runes.
