A grindstone tempers weapons. It sits next to almost every forge in Skyrim, and it takes one unit of the weapon's own material per improvement: an Ebony Sword wants an Ebony Ingot, a Falmer weapon wants Chaurus Chitin, a Long Bow wants Firewood.
Notes
How much a weapon improves depends on the Smithing skill, on any Fortify Smithing gear or potions in play, and on whether you hold the perk for that material. The matching perk doubles the improvement, which is the single largest factor and the reason a perk taken late still pays for itself across a whole inventory.
Tempering grants Smithing experience, unlike smelting.
Enchanted Weapons
A grindstone will not touch an enchanted weapon until you have the Arcane Blacksmith perk at 60 Smithing. With it, enchanted gear tempers exactly like plain gear and keeps its enchantment. Most unique weapons in the game are enchanted, so this perk is what makes them worth carrying past the level they were found.
Requirements
Always one unit, whatever the material.
| Weapon | Improved With |
|---|---|
| Most weapons | One ingot of their own material |
| Falmer weapons | 1 x Chaurus Chitin |
| Long Bow | 1 x Firewood |
| Stalhrim weapons | 1 x Stalhrim |
| Hunting Bow | 1 x Leather Strips |
Mechanics
The perk is worth more than any single piece of gear.
