Chaurus Chitin is the plated shell taken from a dead chaurus, and it has exactly one purpose: improving Falmer equipment. One piece tempers a piece of Falmer armour at a workbench, and one tempers a Falmer weapon at a grindstone. No other gear in the game accepts it.
Where To Find It
Chaurus and Chaurus Reapers drop it, which means Falmer territory: the deep Dwemer ruins and the ice caves where the two species live together. Nineteen guaranteed samples sit across seven locations, with the Irkngthand Slave Pens holding four and Chillwind Depths, Tolvald's Crossing, Frostflow Abyss and Irkngthand Grand Cavern holding three each.
Apothecaries and hunters trade in it, since merchants file it with animal parts rather than with ores and ingots.
Worth Carrying?
At 4 weight for 50 gold the ratio is poor, and it is worth nothing unless you are running Falmer gear. If you are, carry only as many pieces as you have items to improve. Falmer weapons are otherwise unremarkable, so most characters leave the chitin where it fell.
