Skyrim - Crafting Stations

Crafting stations are the fixed pieces of furniture that turn one thing into another. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has six that matter to a smith or an enchanter, and they divide cleanly into two groups: the ones that prepare materials and the ones that make and improve gear.

The distinction is worth learning because only one group raises a skill. A smelter and a tanning rack grant no experience at all, however many hours you spend at them. A forge, a grindstone and a workbench all raise Smithing, and an arcane enchanter raises Enchanting.

Most settlements of any size keep the smithing stations together beside the local blacksmith, so a single stop covers the whole chain. Arcane enchanters are scarcer, and outside the College of Winterhold they tend to sit in mage towers and player homes.
