A Heart Stone is a lump of hardened ash, mined from deposits scattered across Solstheim. The Dragonborn add-on uses it for two things that have nothing to do with each other: conjuring an ash guardian, and enchanting staves at Neloth's staff enchanter.

Acquisition

Heart stone deposits are worked with an ordinary pickaxe and sit in the ash wastes, often near the larger ash spawn nests. At 100 gold for 1 weight they are among the best value per unit carried of anything on the island.

Notes

The Conjure Ash Guardian spell consumes a heart stone when it is cast. If you have none in your inventory the guardian still appears, but it turns hostile immediately and attacks you rather than your enemies. Carry one before casting.

Staff Enchanting

Heart stones are also a component at the staff enchanter in Tel Mithryn, which is the only place in the game where staves can be made.
