Fury is the Novice Illusion spell that turns a target against everyone around it. A creature or person up to level 6 attacks anything nearby for 30 seconds. It is the weakest of the frenzy spells, and Frenzy and Mayhem are the stronger versions.
Fury is a spell for the very start of the game. High Elves begin with it already learned, and every other character can buy the tome from most court wizards or from Drevis Neloren at the College of Winterhold.
Spell Tome
Fury is learned by reading Spell Tome: Fury. Calcelmo, Drevis Neloren, Falion, Farengar Secret-Fire, Madena, Nelacar, Riverwood Trader, Sybille Stentor, Wuunferth the Unliving and Wylandriah sell the tome.
How It Plays
Fury is an aimed spell that hits one target. The target loses track of friend and foe and attacks whoever is closest. In a bandit camp, one enraged bandit can draw the whole group into a brawl. The caster can then pick off the survivors, or simply wait.
The spell suits stealthy and ranged characters best. While the enemies fight each other, an archer or a mage can keep shooting from the shadows. A hidden caster can sometimes clear a whole fort this way without being seen.
Fury has a dark use in towns. Casting it on a peaceful person in public counts as an assault if a witness notices. A caster who stays hidden can turn a target against the people around it with no bounty at all. This makes Fury and its stronger versions useful for some Dark Brotherhood contracts.
Perks and Builds
The level limit of 6 is very low. Fury soon stops working on ordinary enemies unless perks push that limit higher. Animage adds 8 levels against animals, and Kindred Mage adds 10 levels against people. Rage adds 12 more levels to every frenzy spell. These perks stack, which keeps Fury useful much longer than its rank suggests.
The Novice Illusion perk halves the cost of the spell. Quiet Casting silences the cast, so a sneaking caster stays hidden while the target turns on its friends. Master of the Mind lets Fury work on undead, Daedra and Dwarven automatons. Dragons never fall under its spell.
Compared with Frenzy and Mayhem
Frenzy is the Adept version. It works on creatures and people up to level 14 and lasts a full minute. Mayhem is the Master version, and it sends everyone nearby up to level 25 into a rage at once. Fury is by far the cheapest of the three, so it remains handy for low level targets.
Frenzy Rune from the Dragonborn DLC lays the same effect as a trap on the ground. The Staff of Fury and the Staff of Frenzy cast the effect from their own charge, which suits a character with no skill in Illusion.
Training
Drevis Neloren trains Illusion to master level at the College of Winterhold. Atub at the Orc stronghold of Largashbur trains it to expert level. Fury is cheap to cast, so it helps a new mage raise Illusion in the first hours of the game.
Picking the Target
The best target for Fury is the strongest enemy in the room. A raging bandit chief cuts down his own followers far faster than they can wound him. The caster saves magicka and arrows, and the survivors are weak when the brawl ends.
With Quiet Casting, the enemies never learn who started the fight. They move around and attack each other while the caster stays hidden.
Gameplay Tips
- Cast it while hidden. If anyone sees it cast on a peaceful person, it counts as an assault.
- The Rage perk lets the spell work on targets 12 levels higher.
- Dual casting raises the highest level the spell can affect.
