Vesemir is a witcher and the oldest living member of the School of the Wolf. He trained Geralt at Kaer Morhen and became a father figure to him. Vesemir rides with Geralt through White Orchard at the start of the game. He returns at Kaer Morhen, where he falls defending Ciri against the Wild Hunt.

Lore

Vesemir is most likely the oldest witcher of any school on the Continent. He is about as old as the ruins of Kaer Morhen, and he is forever complaining about his creaky bones. He is one of the last survivors of the pogrom that wiped out the Wolf School long ago. He once served as the fencing instructor at Kaer Morhen.

Vesemir was a harsh and demanding teacher in Geralt's youth. Once Geralt and Eskel caught a large bumblebee and tied it to a jug. Vesemir found them laughing at it and punished them with a leather strap. Young witchers were encouraged to make up surnames, so that clients would trust them more. Geralt first picked "Geralt Roger Eric du Haute-Bellegarde". Vesemir dismissed the name as silly and pretentious.

Over the years Vesemir became an adoptive father and mentor to the other witchers. He is always ready to help them with sound advice and a steady hand. When Ciri came into Geralt's care, Geralt and Vesemir taught her the monster slayer's trade at Kaer Morhen. Vesemir has treated her like an adopted granddaughter ever since. Despite his age, he gives no thought to retiring. He still hunts monsters, and he has seen more beasts than all his students put together.

Story

The game opens with a dream of Kaer Morhen, in which Vesemir trains Geralt and the young Ciri. When Geralt wakes, Vesemir is at his side. He has joined Geralt's search for Yennefer across war-torn Temeria. Her trail leads the two witchers to the village of White Orchard. On the way they find a griffin attacking a merchant at a river crossing, and Vesemir is wounded.

The Nilfgaardian commander in White Orchard knows where Yennefer has gone. His price is the griffin's head. Vesemir finds the right spot for a trap and hands Geralt a crossbow for the fight. After the hunt, a row breaks out in the village inn. Vesemir steps in to defend the innkeeper, but only makes matters worse, and the witchers have to draw their swords. As they leave the inn, Yennefer arrives with a Nilfgaardian escort.

Vesemir next appears at Kaer Morhen, where he welcomes Geralt home. Geralt brings Uma, a cursed creature who holds the key to finding Ciri. Yennefer wants to use a risky method to lift the curse. Vesemir insists on first trying a traditional witcher method. The same method once freed the famous Swan of Poviss. It fails, but it proves that Uma's body is a magic prison holding another being.

Vesemir always said that no witcher ever died in his own bed, so he expected death in battle. That day comes when the Wild Hunt descends on Kaer Morhen in pursuit of Ciri. Vesemir gives everything to protect her. He dies a hero's death at the hands of Imlerith, the Hunt's cruel general. His death unleashes Ciri's power in a great outburst that drives the Hunt away. The survivors hold his funeral on the mountainside.

Relationships

Geralt sees Vesemir as a father. Eskel and Lambert are also witchers of Kaer Morhen, and Vesemir is a mentor to them all. Ciri is like a granddaughter to him, and he gives his life for her. Imlerith is his killer.
