Ciri, in full Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, is Geralt's adopted daughter and the heart of the main story. She is a skilled witcher, heiress to several thrones, the last bearer of the Elder Blood and a mage of exceptional talent. The Wild Hunt is on her trail, and Geralt's search for her leads across Velen, Novigrad and Skellige. In several quests the player takes control of Ciri herself, as people tell Geralt what she did.

Lore

Ciri has ashen hair and a scar on her cheek. She is known by many names, among them the Lion Cub of Cintra, Zireael, the Swallow and the Lady of Space and Time. Her mother was Pavetta, and she was raised by her grandmother, Queen Calanthe of Cintra. Her natural father is Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard.

To Geralt, Ciri is far more than an adopted daughter. She is his destiny, his Unexpected Child, bound to the witcher by the most tangled bonds of fate. When she came into his care, Geralt took her to Kaer Morhen, as witcher tradition demanded. There he and Vesemir taught her the monster slayer's trade. It was there that her magic talent first showed itself, and the witchers learned how great her inborn power was. Her gift also proved a curse. Because of it, she would one day have to hide from the whole world, even from Geralt.

Triss Merigold has always treated Ciri like a younger sister. In the years before the game, the elven Sage Avallac'h became her tutor and mentor, and saved her life many times.

Story

Ciri has returned to this world, and the Wild Hunt is after her. Eredin wants the power in her Elder Blood. She first appears on Ard Skellig, where she plays a part in a magic disaster and then flees from grave danger. She next lands in the heart of Crookback Bog in Velen. Exhausted, she looks for shelter and falls into the clutches of the Crones. She escapes with her life by a hair's breadth. The Crones summon Imlerith, a general of the Wild Hunt, to take her to his king, but Ciri gives him the slip.

In Velen, Ciri meets a little girl named Gretka, who speaks of a fearsome Wolf King. The Wolf King turns out to be a werewolf. Ciri kills it and saves a villager, though she is wounded in the fight. The villager takes the two girls to Crow's Perch. There the Bloody Baron treats Ciri with kindness and respect, and his men take to her for her hunting skill. One evening she challenges the Baron to a horse race. Near the finish a basilisk attacks and carries the Baron off to its nest. Ciri kills the beast and rescues him.

In Novigrad, Ciri turns to Dandelion for help. They promise the crime boss Whoreson Junior a heap of treasure in return for his help. When they fail to deliver, Junior kidnaps their friend Dudu and tortures him. Ciri breaks into Junior's house, strikes the thug down and frees Dudu. Junior's men then chase her and Dandelion to Temple Isle, where the Temple Guard corners them. Ciri teleports away, and Dandelion is captured.

Ciri reappears out of thin air on the island of Hindarsfjall in Skellige, exhausted and wounded. Her masked companion leaves her in the care of a young islander, Skjall, whose family tends to her. Then the Wild Hunt descends on the village. Skjall risks his life and honor to help her escape. Ciri rejoins her companion at Drowned Dead Rock. After a quarrel, he puts her to sleep with a spell and sails off with her into the fog. That companion is Avallac'h. Feeling a curse take hold of him, he hides Ciri from the Hunt on the Isle of Mists.

Geralt finally finds Ciri on the Isle of Mists. When he steps into the room where she sleeps, Avallac'h's protective spell snaps under the weight of their shared destiny. Geralt and his adopted daughter are reunited after years apart. Ciri explains what drives Eredin. The homeland of the Aen Elle faces destruction, and he wants her power to open the gates for an invasion of this world. As soon as she wakes, the Hunt picks up her trail. Ciri uses her powers to carry herself and Geralt to Kaer Morhen.

Avallac'h's warning comes true, and the Wild Hunt descends on Kaer Morhen. Everyone there gives their all to defend her. When Imlerith kills Vesemir, Ciri's power breaks loose in an uncontrolled outburst of rage. The raw strength of her Elder Blood strikes friend and foe alike, and it forces the Hunt to retreat. In the end it is Ciri who saves the defenders from certain death. The outburst frightens everyone, Ciri most of all, so she stays at Kaer Morhen for a time while Avallac'h teaches her to control her power.

Ciri then learns that Imlerith will attend the Crones' sabbath on Bald Mountain, and she persuades Geralt to go with her for revenge. Geralt kills Imlerith in a final duel. Ciri kills two of the three Crones. The third, Weavess, escapes with Vesemir's medallion, the only keepsake Ciri had of her old teacher.

Ciri has not seen her father since she was a small child. To her, Emhyr is a stranger, and one responsible for the deaths of many people she loved. Geralt either takes her to Vizima to meet him or does not. Ciri also faces the sorceresses of the Lodge, who offer her a place among them as a full and equal member. She makes clear that she has a mind of her own and will not be a willing tool in their hands. Back in Novigrad, she settles a few old scores.

A visit to Avallac'h's secret laboratory in Skellige shakes Ciri to her core. She learns that elven Sages and human mages have taken an unbroken interest in her bloodline for two centuries. A haughty she-elf in the laboratory adds insult to injury. Ciri may take her anger out on the laboratory itself. She then asks to see Skjall, only to learn that he is dead. His body was thrown in a ditch, since the islanders saw him as a disgraced outcast. Ciri pulls it out and buries him near the cemetery, to the outrage of the locals.

On Undvik, Ciri is meant to stay out of the final battle. She is forced into the fight to save Geralt and takes on Caranthir. After Eredin dies, it is time for Ciri to face her destiny. Only she has the power to stop the White Frost, which threatens this world and countless others. She knows Geralt would never let her go, so she slips away with Avallac'h and steps into the elven tower.

The ending depends on Geralt's choices with Ciri along the way. If Ciri does not return from the tower, Geralt goes back to Crookback Bog, kills Weavess and takes back Vesemir's medallion. If she lives and did not meet Emhyr, or Nilfgaard lost the war, Geralt tells the emperor that Ciri is dead. He then meets her at the inn in White Orchard and gives her a new silver sword. Ciri sets out on the Path as a witcher. If she met her father and Nilfgaard won the war, she accepts his offer. She leaves for Nilfgaard to take her place as heir to the throne.

Relationships

Geralt is Ciri's adoptive father, and Yennefer is her adoptive mother. Emhyr var Emreis is her natural father, a man she barely knows. Vesemir taught her at Kaer Morhen and gave his life for her. Triss is like an older sister to her, and Avallac'h is her tutor. Skjall and the Bloody Baron both sheltered her on the run.
