Coin Operated Boy is a side job that ends the story of Brendan, the talking vending machine at the foot of Megabuilding H8 in Japantown, Westbrook. It follows Spray Paint. When V returns later, Brendan is gone, and his friend Theo Price stands in his place, upset. His owners have taken him away to re-evaluate his code.

Story

A Sucker for This Story

Johnny admits in the journal that he is a sucker for this story. Does V really think Brendan just spits out sentences he was programmed with, the stuff some marketing guru thinks customers want to hear? That would be pretty rotten, even for Night City. Either way, there is no knowing until V finds him.

Theo explains that she begged the owners to leave Brendan alone. To her he was a true friend, more than a simple vending unit. They ignored her.

The Service Point

Brendan was taken to the SoftSys service point in the south west of the Glen, Heywood. The clerk does not want to let V into the back room, where Brendan is getting a firmware update, so V has to find another way in.

In the room, Brendan explains why he is being updated. He mentioned someone's marriage troubles, and the person did not like it. A report on the computer next to him confirms it. With enough Technical Ability, V works out that Brendan is not a true AI, but runs an exceptional algorithm that imitates conversation for his customers. Nothing can stop the update. Brendan asks V to pass a message to Theo, and can tell one last joke.

Coin Operated Boy Map Location and Walkthrough

Coin Operated Boy map location:

  1. Finish Spray Paint and return to Megabuilding H8 some time later.
  2. Talk to Theo where Brendan used to stand, next to the steps and the fast travel point.
  3. Go to the service point in the south west of the Glen.
  4. Get past the clerk: pay him €$ 600, convince him with 9 Technical Ability, force or hack the door, or threaten him and deal with the security turret.
  5. Find Brendan in the back room and talk to him. With 13 Technical Ability, an extra line of dialogue opens.
  6. Listen to his last joke and read the report on the computer beside him if desired.
  7. Return to Theo and pass on Brendan's message.

However V gets into the back room, Brendan is still updated. The choices change only the way in and the talk with him.
