MaxTac, the Maximum Force Tactical Division, is the elite cyberpsycho squad of the NCPD. Its single aim is to stop cyberpsychos. Its officers are the best trained fighters the police have, armed with top military armour, weapons, cyberware and vehicles. They arrive fast, hit hard and shoot to kill when someone goes over the edge. Those they do not kill are taken to Los Padres, a prison built to hold cyberpsychos.
History
The Psycho Squads
Cyberpsychosis became a serious problem in crowded cities across the United States. Treatment existed, but getting a chromed-up maniac into a doctor's office was the hard part, and ordinary police could do little against someone killing at random. The government began to build special units to hunt cyberpsychos, and in time police forces everywhere formed their own psycho squads. One of the earliest in Night City captured a rampaging cyberpsycho alive after a battle that cost many officers their lives.
Hammerman
After the nuclear blast, Commander Max Hammerman held what was left of the police together, most of it MaxTac, through sheer will. Incorruptible to the end, he took MaxTac away from the NCPD and kept an iron grip on every suspected cyberpsycho in the city, moving from one neighbourhood to the next to shut down protection rackets. For a time MaxTac worked as an independent force, taking contracts from whole neighbourhoods and even private citizens. It also hunted down a leader of Maelstrom. Later it came back under the police.
Way of Life
MaxTac works in small assault teams. Many officers carry so much chrome that they are on the watch list themselves, and some have full body conversions. The NCPD calls it fighting fire with fire, though many officers are close to cyberpsychosis. Most are chromed loners with one goal in life: to catch as many cyberpsychos as possible. Some say the line between the hunters and the hunted is very thin.
Officers get their pick of weapons, the best cyberware, prototype gear and a free hand in their work. Despite these privileges, nobody in their right mind would ever join. Other police divisions keep MaxTac at arm's length, making it almost a state within the state. When it arrives, there are sure to be deaths, and any inquiry into them is sure to be dropped.
Their weapons are made to bring down heavily chromed targets. A hunted cyberpsycho is almost always killed, and capture is rare. Some officers are former cyberpsychos who were caught, reconditioned and forced to join. MaxTac is also called in whenever overwhelming force puts lives at risk and normal police cannot cope.
Jobs
MaxTac storms in to finish a cyberpsycho at the Jinguji store in Bullets. A five-star wanted level brings MaxTac to the scene, even in Dogtown.
