Smoke on the Water

Smoke on the Water
Type	Cyberpsycho Sighting
Giver	Regina Jones
District	Coastview
Region	Pacifica

Smoke on the Water is a cyberpsycho sighting for Regina Jones on a pier in Coastview, Pacifica. Screaming, dead Scavengers and a car wreck mark the spot. The cyberpsycho is Diego Ramirez, an ex special forces soldier whose daughter, Sofia, was kidnapped by the Tyger Claws. He hunted them across Night City until they agreed to give her back. It was a trap.

Story

A Nice Place

The journal remarks that, if not for all the screaming, the dead Scavengers and that wrecked car, the place would be rather nice. But that is life. It suggests checking the pier first.

The Trail of Bodies

The scene tells a story. A car rammed a motorcycle on purpose, to do as much damage as possible. One victim was crushed, another was the first to be shot. A trail of Tyger Claws, shot in the head with a military rifle, leads down the pier, as if they were retreating. At the end, the big ones gathered for a last stand. Unarmed civilians who hid during the shooting were killed with the same rifle. One gang leader, alone, died slowly and painfully.

The Trap

Two shards explain why. In one, Tyger Claws boss Hideyoshi Ueno screams at Ken Masuda: the man has already killed twenty of theirs and wrecked their businesses, and Ueno cannot sleep for fear of him. Masuda plans to use the daughter as bait and shoot him when he shows himself. In the other, Masuda offers Diego a truce: they made a mistake and will hand her back, at the pier in Pacifica. Diego says he will be there in twenty minutes.

Sofia

In a Tyger Claws van under the pier lies a young woman, tortured to death days ago. It is Sofia. Regina pieces it together: the Tyger Claws kidnapped her and turned her into a doll, not knowing her father was ex special forces. He went hunting them across the city like a safari until they agreed to the swap. Sofia was already dead in the boot. That was the second, and last, time they underestimated him.

Notes

• The police that turn up at the crime scene afterwards never leave on their own. Waiting three days on the pier and then a day far away moves the area on to its last stage.

• The sighting is named after the Deep Purple song Smoke on the Water.
