Skill Points

Skill Points
Starting value, all five skills 5
Next strength, stamina or dexterity point ((current - 4) x (current - 4)) x 2 gold
Next fighting ability or parry point (current - 4) x (current - 4) gold
Skill points per level-up 3
Reset cost from the 23rd point 3,000 gold

Skill points are what a knight spends on three lines: one-handed weapon skill, two-handed weapon skill and armour skill. They are not what players usually mean by skills, which are the five trained attributes: strength, stamina, dexterity, fighting ability and parry. The two work in completely different ways.

Skills are bought with gold, one point at a time, at a price set by the current value, and once bought they stay for good. Skill points work the other way round: three arrive with every level-up, and they can be handed back. A skill changes what a knight does in a fight. A skill point changes what the merchant is willing to sell, because weapons are gated by weapon skill, and armour and shields by armour skill.

What the five skills cost

All five skills start at 5, and the price of the next point depends on the current value alone. Strength, stamina and dexterity share one formula, while fighting ability and parry use another that costs exactly half as much.

Strength, stamina, dexterity: ((current - 4) x (current - 4)) x 2 Fighting ability, parry: (current - 4) x (current - 4)

The sixth point of strength therefore costs 2 gold and the sixth point of parry costs 1. Because the cost is squared, it climbs quickly: at a current value of 80 the next point of strength costs 11,552 gold and the next point of parry 5,776.

Putting points back

Skill points can be returned one at a time, and they are the only part of a build that can be undone, since the five skills can never be reset. Each return costs more as the number of points already returned grows, until the price levels off: from the 23rd point onwards every reset costs 3,000 gold, and it is still 3,000 at 260 points. Changing direction completely is therefore a matter of saving up gold rather than of making up one's mind.

Points Already Reset Cost Of The Next One
1 to 7 500 gold
8 to 11 1,000 gold
12 to 22 2,000 gold
23 and above 3,000 gold
