Inside a Charred Fortress, the Charred Warlock is what turns a hard fight into an unwinnable one. It hangs behind the swordsmen, throws a green fireball that leaves a burning vortex on the stone where it lands, and keeps conjuring fresh twitchers for as long as it lives. Nothing else in the Ashlands rewards killing it first quite so much, and nothing else punishes ignoring it so thoroughly.
Behaviour
It is a caster by instinct: it holds its distance and refuses to close to melee while it has any room to back off. Every eight seconds, out to twenty metres, it thrusts its staff forward and hurls a green fireball. The impact deals roughly 100 pierce and 20 blunt, and the fireball leaves a lingering fire vortex worth another 70 fire that sets you burning and denies that ground. Every ten seconds, out to thirty metres, it raises hand and staff and summons a Charred Twitcher with only fifty health. Each one is weak alone but relentless in numbers, and up to ten can exist at once across every warlock currently loaded. Roughly half of them spawn wearing a charred helm worth sixty armour, which makes an already slow kill noticeably slower. The warlock does not sleep, does not flee, and does not stop summoning until it is dead.
Where to Find It
Unlike the rest of the burnt army it does not wander the open ash, so you only find it around structures in the Ashlands. Up to three are placed inside each Charred Fortress as a one-time spawn, which means a cleared fortress stays cleared. Beyond that it rarely spawns from the Effigy of Malice inside a fortress when a player comes near, and rarely from an elite Monument of Torment, which only produces two-star versions. Stars take it from 600 health to 1,200 and 1,800, and a two-star warlock in a helm behind a wall of warriors is one of the nastiest set-ups in the game. Reaching the biome and finding a fortress worth breaking into is all that gates it.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Kill the caster before anything it summoned, because the twitchers are free and the warlock is not. The reflex weapon for the Ashlands is a frost blade, and it is the wrong choice here: the warlock turns aside both frost and thrusting damage and barely notices fire. Spirit is what it really dreads, with blunt, slash and lightning landing at full value behind it. That rules out shooting it down from safety, so close the distance using fortress walls and pillars to break line of sight on the fireball. Never stand in the vortex it plants, because the burning stacks faster than food regeneration replaces it. A Fire Resistance Barley Wine takes most of the vortex out of the equation, so have it running before you step through the gate. Full Ashlands gear, a heavy blunt weapon like the Bloodgeon and enough stamina to reach it in one run make the kill clean. Anything less turns into a war of attrition against an endless supply of chaff.

Drops
It drops Charred Bone as always, with a five percent chance at the trophy that makes clearing a fortress feel paid for.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Charred Warlock is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
