Charred Fortresses are walled strongholds of the Charred in the Ashlands. The altar in the central tower holds the Bell Fragments that make the Bells used to summon Fader.

Where to Find It

Every world has 20 fortresses. They stand inland on ground at least 20 m up, away from the coast and between the lava fields, mostly on the central islands. The smaller islands to the east and west usually have none. They are among the first locations placed in a world, and they keep 256 m from one another and from Fader's Altar. A tall beam of green light rises from the bell altar and can be seen from far off. It goes out once the altar is destroyed. Ashlands Ruins cluster around fortresses, within 70 m.

What's Inside

A tall rectangular outer wall with pillars and bronze spikes surrounds the fortress, with a closed gate in each of two opposite walls. The yard inside is scattered with gravestones, with an Effigy of Malice in two corners and two stone ramps up to the walkways on the walls. In the centre stands a tower crowned with more spikes, which you enter through one gate. Walls, pillars, gates and spikes only take damage from a tool tier 5 pickaxe. Pillars have 1 health, walls and spikes 1,500 and gates 6,000. The outer walls are three layers thick and the tower walls one. Inside the tower you find the bell altar, which breaks for 2 to 4 Bell Fragments, a Charred Chest, two Molten Cores and a 50% chance of a vegvisir for Fader. Up to three more Charred Chests stand against the tower walls, and the yard can hold up to eight more Molten Cores. The fortress has 78 bronze spike strips.

Notes

  • The 78 spike strips give about 273 Scrap Bronze per fortress.
  • An outer wall is three layers thick (4,500 health in total), so it breaks sooner than a gate (6,000).
  • Charred Chests have 200 health and resist most damage except lightning, poison and spirit. The bell altar has 10 health.
  • You need the Charred Cogwheels that Skuggs drop to build a Catapult.
  • While a player is within 60 m, the Effigies of Malice spawn Charred Warriors and Charred Marksmen (43.2% each) and Charred Warlocks (8.6%) every 12 seconds.
