The Surtling is a knee high demon of living flame, and the only reason anyone remembers it is the glowing core in its chest. It burns away beside the fire geysers of the Swamp and lobs fireballs at whatever wanders into range. With twenty health, it dies to almost anything you can swing. The catch is that it sets you alight first, in a biome where you are already wet, poisoned and short of stamina, and you will be coming back to farm it whether you enjoy it or not.

Behaviour

It fights only at range and has no melee attack at all. From about ten metres it winds back and throws a ball of fire every three seconds. Each one deals 10 blunt and 40 fire and sets you burning, but the projectile only travels at eleven metres a second, so you can watch it come. If you close the distance, it backs off instead of engaging, and chasing one across broken swamp ground is a good way to walk into a Leech. It never sleeps, never leaves the area entirely and does not call anything else in, but it rarely appears alone: geysers spawn them three at a time, and the sulfur raid brings four. Water is its one absolute weakness, not as a damage type but as terrain. Standing in water burns a Surtling to nothing in seconds, while rain, luckily for it, does not count. Star variants are easy to spot: blue flames for one star and pink for two, with forty and sixty health and fireballs that hit proportionally harder.

Where to Find It

You will actually meet them in the Swamp, clustered around fire geysers. Each geyser has three spawn points, which refill roughly every five minutes at any hour of the day or night and roll for stars each time. That makes a geyser the single most reliable renewable resource in the mid game, and the reason most players build a small outpost over one. They also turn up uninvited: once Bonemass is dead, the raid announced by a smell of sulfur in the air drops four of them near your base, and those spawn without stars. Their true home biome is the Ashlands, where they appear among the Charred rather than around geysers. Most Vikings will have farmed hundreds of them in the Swamp long before they ever sail that far south.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Killing one is trivial. The real skill is not catching fire. Any weapon will do, frost deals double if you happen to carry it, and fire, poison or spirit damage is pointless against something made of flame. The fireball is slow enough to block outright, and parrying it staggers the Surtling and buys you a free approach, so a shield is worth more here than a better sword. Better still, skip the fight. Dig the ground down around a geyser's spawn points with a pickaxe until the hollow floods. Every Surtling that spawns there lands in water and dies on its own, leaving the coal and cores floating for you to collect on a circuit. Fire Resistance Mead makes any direct scrap harmless, and bronze gear is plenty. The real danger is being shot at by one while a Draugr archer and a Leech are also on you, so clear the ground first.

  • It takes extra damage from Frost.
  • It ignores Fire, Poison and Spirit.

Drops

Surtling Cores power your Smelters, kilns and portals, and the coal piles up beside them.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is not only in the numbers: a starred Surtling is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

2 ⭐ Surtling 40 150% x2
3 ⭐⭐ Surtling 60 200% x4

Notes

  • The name Surtling refers to Surtr, also anglicized as 'Surt', a mighty fire giant, or jötunn, in Norse mythology.
  • 1-star Surtlings burn with blue flames, and 2-star Surtlings with pink ones.
  • You can parry their projectiles, which staggers the Surtling for a while, lets you close the distance for melee attacks, and may push it into water.
  • Water damages them, but rain does not affect them.
