Bonemass is the third of the Forsaken and the boss a great many runs die against: a giant humanoid heap of toxic sludge, mud and old skeletons squatting at an altar deep in the Swamp. It has five thousand health, nothing you own can stagger it, and it does not need to touch you to kill you, because its poison cloud cannot be blocked. Beat it and the game opens up, since the Wishbone it drops is what finds the silver buried under the Mountain.
Behaviour
It moves slowly, and it never stops moving towards you. Its punch comes round every seven seconds for combined blunt and poison damage, and it flattens any shelter you built to hide behind in a single swing. Every half minute it hunches over and vomits a poison cloud nine metres across for 130 damage, and no shield in the game can block or parry it. The cloud then hangs in place for fifteen seconds, refreshing the poison on anyone still standing in it, so one bad step becomes a slow death instead of an instant one. Roughly once a minute it throws a lump of goop that bursts into four Skeletons or four Blobs, and it keeps doing so until up to eight of each are alive at once. That is how a manageable duel turns into a mob. It also brings its own weather, keeping constant rain over the arena so you stay Wet for the whole fight. It never flees, never staggers and never gives you a pause.
Where to Find It
You only ever meet Bonemass on purpose. Its Forsaken altar generates in the Swamp as a ring of standing stones around a mound with a stone bowl in the middle. You find it by exploring or by reading a Vegvisir runestone inside a Sunken Crypt or a ruined Swamp building, which marks the location on your map. The altar stays empty until you place ten Withered Bones in the bowl, and that offering is the real gate: Withered Bones come from crypt chests and Draugr piles, and you cannot open a crypt without a Swamp Key from The Elder. Each summon brings one Bonemass with no starred variants, and you can use the altar again as often as you like. Day and night make no difference, since the boss brings its own rain either way.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Blunt and frost are its weaknesses, and nothing else. A mace is the right tool and most players bring an iron one, while Frostner hits both weaknesses at once but needs silver you probably do not have yet. Swords deal half damage, and arrows and fire are cut to a quarter, so a bow is close to useless and trying to burn it is a real mistake. Poison Resistance Mead is not optional: drink one before you start, carry at least three, and watch the timer, because the cloud alone will kill an unprotected player in full iron. Work around behind it whenever you can, since the vomit reaches much less far to its rear, and never try to block that attack. An iron or Banded Shield can absorb the punch but will still stagger you, so step away from it rather than soak it. Let the summoned Skeletons and Blobs trail after you in a wide circle instead of stopping to clear them, or you will just get four more. Full iron armour, a mace and a stock of mead is the honest minimum, and Eikthyr's stamina power makes the running far easier. Shut your tames indoors before you win, because this kill unlocks raids that arrive from the air.
- It takes extra damage from Blunt and Frost.
- It resists Slash.
- It is very resistant to Pierce and Fire.
- It is immune to Poison.
Drops
Mount the trophy on the Sacrificial Stones for its damage reduction power. The Wishbone is the only way to find buried silver and treasure.

Forsaken Power
Hang the Bonemass trophy on its stone at the Sacrificial Stones and you can call on its power:
- 25% less blunt, slash and pierce damage taken
- Blocking costs no stamina
- +5 stamina back on every block
This is the tanking power, the one that carries a fight you should be losing. Physical damage is most of what the game throws at you.
It lasts five minutes, and every Forsaken power shares one twenty-minute cooldown, so only one is ever active. Anyone within ten metres of you gets it too.
Notes
- Bonemass has had a model change.
- The in-game trophies menu has a second description of Bonemass: "A mess of black soil and old bone, thankfully quiet now."
