The Draugr is the foot soldier of the Swamp, a bloated, waterlogged corpse still wearing the rags of its viking gear. It is the first enemy in the game that hits hard enough to matter even through iron. Three in four carry an axe and the fourth carries a bow, and they almost never come one at a time.

Behaviour

Draugr shamble rather than charge, but once they have seen you they commit fully and never break off. As undead they do not sleep, so the marsh has no quiet hour: they patrol around ruins, sunken buildings and their own villages at all times, and they wade through water as easily as they walk on mud. The axe carriers, who are the majority, swing a horizontal slash that reaches a little over two metres for 48 slash plus chop every three seconds. That chop damage is why a draugr pack shreds wooden walls, boats and anything else you built from timber while you were busy blocking. The archers hang back and shoot 48 pierce arrows at you from up to twenty metres, exactly the range at which you will be focused on the melee ones. They can be staggered, though only so far. They do not flee and do not summon reinforcements, and they have no need to: body piles keep spawning fresh ones every few seconds until you smash the spawner itself.

Where to Find It

Draugr are common everywhere in the Swamp, and they cluster around structures: the ruined towers, the sunken buildings and above all the Draugr Villages, where several are always within earshot of each other. Inside Sunken Crypts and Mountain Towers they pour out of body piles, which spawn a new one on a short timer for as long as the pile stands. Ignore a pile and a single room becomes an endless fight. One and two star variants are common enough to plan for, with double and triple health. They leave the marsh too: once The Elder is dead they start turning up on foggy nights in the Meadows and Black Forest, despawning at dawn, and the swamp raid announced by a foul smell marches a group of them straight to your front gate.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Leave fire at home. Draugr take half damage from it, so the Fire Arrows and burning weapons that served you so well in the Black Forest are a waste of resources here, and the poison you might reach for instead does nothing at all. Ordinary steel is what works: blunt, slash and pierce all land at full value, so hit them with whatever you are best with. The real technique is the parry. Their axe swing is slow and heavily telegraphed, and a parry with an Iron Buckler opens one up for a free killing combo, which matters a lot when three are closing in on you. Fight on the narrowest dry ground you can find so only one reaches you at a time, kill the archers first because your footwork does not stop their arrows, and smash any body pile the moment you see it, not after the third wave. Bronze gear survives the swamp; iron and a shield make it routine.

Drops

Entrails are the real prize, because they are the only way to get Sausages, and sausages carry most players all the way through the Mountain.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is more than the numbers: a starred draugr is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Level Stars Image Health Damage Drops
1 - Draugr 100 100% x1
2 ⭐ Draugr 200 150% x2
3 ⭐⭐ Draugr 300 200% x4

Notes

  • Entering a Sunken Crypt and leaving Draugr alive there counts towards spawn caps, which effectively suppresses their spawns across a large area.
  • Draugr, or Draug, are "the undead of Valheim", also called aptrganga or aptrgangr in Norse literature. Draugr live in their graves, often guarding the treasure buried with them in their burial mound.
