The Swamp is a flooded sheet of black water and sodden soil under bare ancient trees. It rains there one hundred per cent of the time, whatever the weather is doing anywhere else, and every creature in it is hostile. It is the wall the game puts in front of you, and iron is on the other side.

Locations

The Swamp spawns from 2,000 m out to 6,000 m, and only on ground within about 20 m of sea level, which is why it is always flat and half flooded. A Swamp rarely appears on your starting continent, so it is usually the first biome you have to sail to.

Location Image What's Inside
Sunken Crypt Sunken Crypt The iron dungeon, locked until The Elder drops the swamp key. Muddy scrap piles, draugr, blobs and a Bonemass vegvisir.
Geyser Geyser A fire vent with three surtling spawns. Flood it and it becomes a coal and core farm.
Abandoned Hut Abandoned Hut A ruined stilt house. A chest usually means a wraith is waiting with it.
Swamp Runestone Tower Swamp Runestone Tower A ruined tower with a body pile, draugr and a 30% Bonemass vegvisir.
Swamp Grave Swamp Grave Six great stones around a chest, guarded by two body piles and a bone pile.
Bonemass' Altar Bonemass' Altar The boiling death altar. Ten withered bones summon him.
The Bog Witch's Hut The Bog Witch's Hut A hut under a shimmering dome, three to eight kilometres out. The Bog Witch trades here.

Boss

Bonemass

Bonemass is summoned at the boiling death altar with 10 Withered Bones, which you mine out of Muddy Scrap Piles. He has 5,000 health, is weak to blunt and frost and immune to poison, and he drops a poison cloud you cannot block or dodge.

He drops the Wishbone, which finds buried Silver, buried scrap and buried treasure, and that is your gate into the silver tier. His power cuts physical damage taken by a quarter and makes blocking cost no stamina at all.

Hazards

  • The rain never stops, so you are wet the whole time: health, stamina and eitr regeneration all drop until you get under a roof.
  • At night, cold stacks on top of wet.
  • Poison is the biome's signature, from Leeches, Blobs, Oozers and Bonemass himself. While it ticks, poison stops health regeneration.
  • Leeches attack while you swim, and swimming drains stamina.
  • Draugr can spawn inside a Muddy Scrap Pile and hit you from within it.
  • Surtlings throw fire from a distance and will set your buildings alight.

Lore

The stones here are about what the Swamp hides. One will not even name Bonemass: "the thing I will not name stirs below the surface, a bitter mass of bone and sin". Another is just three lines long: "Below the mist and murk / Bone speaks to bone / Remembering flesh".

The Draugr get the longest one. They were a proud civilisation that challenged the gods and lost, and they return "as Draugr, unholy walkers in ancient armour, creatures of rust and despair. Break them, bury them, let them know they are dead." A gentler stone calls it a mercy.

Notes

  • A Sunken Crypt counts as sheltered, so a Campfire inside gives you Rested and clears Wet at the same time.
  • The Stagbreaker and Iron Sledge pass damage through Muddy Scrap Piles without destroying them, which is how you kill a Body Pile in a sealed room.
  • Scrap Iron cannot go through a wood portal, so a forward base with a Smelter is standard.
  • Gucksacks never regrow, so Abominations are the renewable way to farm Guck.
  • Thistle is easiest to find at night, by its blue glow.
