Every Smelter and Forge burns Coal. That is why most of it ends up cooked at home in a Charcoal Kiln rather than farmed off the Surtlings that rise from the fire geysers of the Swamp.
Production
It is burned as fuel in the Smelter and the Blast Furnace, and every bar of metal takes coal to smelt.
How to Get It
Surtlings spawn from the fire geysers dotted through the Swamp and drop coal when killed. A Geyser walled in with stakes or dug into a trap will farm them while you do something else. The steadier supply is the Charcoal Kiln, which turns any sort of wood into coal inside your own walls, so the only tool you need is the axe you already own. Meat left too long on a Cooking Station chars into coal as well, and the Obliterator turns junk and coins into it. Coal teleports freely.
Notes
- Smelting takes roughly 2.1 Coal for every bar of metal.
- You can build a passive Coal farm in the Swamp by digging the ground at a fire Geyser down to the water level. The Surtlings it spawns then keep taking damage until they die and drop their loot.
- The Ashlands are a great place to farm Coal: set a stack of Wood on fire there with a Campfire or the Staff of Embers, and each stack quickly turns into 50 Coal. Coal goes through a Portal, so it is easy to take home.
- Buying Fishing Bait and feeding it to the Obliterator turns every 5 Coins into 1 Coal.
