Hjalmar an Craite, also called Wrymouth, is the son of Jarl Crach an Craite and the older brother of Cerys. He is a bold Skellige warrior and one of the main claimants to the throne of the isles. Geralt follows him to the island of Undvik during the quest The Lord of Undvik.
Lore
The saying "like father, like son" fits Crach and his firstborn perfectly. Hjalmar takes after his father in build and in character. Many predict that one day he will win more honor and fame than his father.
Hjalmar is a broad-shouldered and very able swordsman, with the makings of a superb warrior. He has charisma and an almost mad daring. These traits let him stir the hearts of young Skelligers from every clan who hunger for loot and glory. As a boy, he took a bad fall on the ice while showing off on skates to Ciri. The fall left his face crooked and earned him his nickname.
Story
These traits make Hjalmar an obvious choice for the next king of Skellige. When the time comes after King Bran's death, he wastes no time in staking his claim. He sets off at once for Undvik to prove his courage against the legendary Ice Giant. If Geralt helps him in The Lord of Undvik, the two fight side by side and defeat the giant.
Later, a feast at Kaer Trolde ends in a massacre of the guests. In King's Gambit, Geralt may side with Hjalmar. Hjalmar then proves his honor by avenging the guests murdered at the Bloody Banquet, and he clears his family name. These deeds convince the Skelligers that he is fit to be king. In Coronation, he takes the throne. It will take time for the young ruler to step out of his father's shadow, yet most islanders are proud of their choice.
If Geralt sides with Cerys instead, she becomes queen. Hjalmar bears her no grudge and puts all his strength behind her reign. This shows surprising political maturity. If Geralt sides with neither of them, Hjalmar's hot temper proves his doom. He dies alongside his sister while leading one of the first attacks on the Nilfgaardian fleet.
In Brothers In Arms: Skellige, Geralt may ask Hjalmar for help against the Wild Hunt. Hjalmar answers the call without hesitation and comes to defend Ciri at Kaer Morhen.
Relationships
Crach an Craite is Hjalmar's father, and Cerys an Craite is his younger sister. Brother and sister both claim the throne. Ciri was his childhood playmate.
