Leather Strips are the binding used in nearly every recipe at a forge. One Leather cuts into four strips at a tanning rack, and almost no armour or weapon in the game is assembled without them. At 0.1 weight each they are the cheapest thing in a smith's inventory to carry in bulk.
Acquisition
Every blacksmith stocks 12 to 33 strips at all times, and general goods merchants often carry 10 to 40 more, so buying is usually faster than cutting your own. Certain cupboards have a 15 per cent chance of holding 10 to 40. Failing that, tan any hide into Leather at a tanning rack and cut the Leather into strips at the same station.
Notes
Strips build items but rarely improve them. Tempering at a grindstone or workbench almost always calls for the ingot or hide the item is made of instead. There are exactly two exceptions in the game: a Hunting Bow takes one strip at a grindstone, and the Gloves of the Pugilist take two strips and one Leather at a workbench.
Merchants
Buying is normally quicker than tanning.
