Tanning Rack

Tanning Rack
Type Crafting Station
Turns Hides into leather
Perk None
Experience None
Found At Farms and settlements

A tanning rack converts animal hides and pelts into Leather, and Leather into Leather Strips. Like the smelter it grants no Smithing experience and needs no perk, which makes it pure preparation: the value shows up later, at the forge.

The Two Recipes

Almost any hide or pelt tans one for one into Leather. Goat Hide is the single exception in the game, needing two. Each piece of Leather then cuts into four Leather Strips at the same rack.

Deer Pelts, confusingly, are not Deer Hides and cannot be tanned at all without the unofficial patch. Deer drop hides; the pelts are found as loot and serve no crafting purpose.

Worth The Detour?

Usually not, if you are near a town. Blacksmiths always carry 10 to 27 Leather and 12 to 33 Leather Strips, so buying is faster than hunting. The rack earns its keep in the field, where a bag of pelts from giants and wolves is heavy and the leather it becomes is not.
