Mama Welles, born Guadalupe Alejandra Welles, is the owner of El Coyote Cojo, a bar in Heywood, and the mother of Jackie Welles. Anyone who walks through her door can count on being listened to and fed. Like every mother, she would give anything, even her life, to protect her children. She is a respected figure in Heywood, and even the toughest Valentinos nod to her as she passes.

Biography

Heywood

Mama Welles married Raúl Welles, a member of the Valentinos, and the couple had a son, Jackie. Raúl drank and beat his wife and son for years. When Jackie grew strong enough, he fought back and nearly killed his father, and Raúl left for good. Mama Welles never approved of Jackie's years with the Valentinos, though her bar is still decorated with the gang's signs. Padre once said she has a good heart and is tougher than any ganger in the district.

V and Jackie

After Jackie and V's first job together, she takes V into her home, and V lives with the family for months until finding a place of their own. She disapproves of Jackie's girlfriend Misty Olszewski and prefers a girl from Heywood that Jackie used to date.

The Ofrenda

When Jackie dies after the Konpeki heist, the fate of his body is in V's hands. If his body comes home, Mama Welles holds a traditional ofrenda for him at El Coyote Cojo. Friends, Valentinos, Padre and Viktor come to remember him. V can speak at the gathering or stay silent, and V can persuade her to let Misty come and to talk with her. When the ceremony ends, she gives V the keys to Jackie's motorbike. If his body is not returned, she calls V in tears over the lack of a funeral, but she still gives V the motorbike.

Mama Welles is warm, strong and proud. She treats her customers like family and her friends like her own children. She has firm opinions and does not hide them, and she can be stubborn when she disapproves of someone. Her love for Jackie is the centre of her life.

Relationships

Jackie Welles was her only son. Misty Olszewski is his girlfriend, whom she does not like. Padre and the Valentinos respect her. V becomes something like a second child to her.
