MetaCorp, also called Meta, is both a corporation and one of the seven nomad nations. It is a security and maritime construction company, and the biggest shipping company in North America.
History
The Raft City
MetaCorp was founded by Jonathan Meta, a high ranking officer of the United States who led the Eleventh Special Forces, a secret unit, in the Central American Wars. When the wars ended, the government abandoned countless soldiers instead of bringing them home. Meta's unit was among them, because it did not exist on any record. Meta and his men stole cargo aircraft in Panama and joined thousands of other stranded soldiers. Those soldiers had lashed aircraft carriers and offshore drilling platforms together into a makeshift raft city.
On that raft, Meta founded MetaCorp as a security and maritime construction firm, using military equipment worth billions. The leaders of the raft city declared themselves a new nation and secured their independence with stolen nuclear warheads. MetaCorp helped build the raft cities New Galveston and Atlantis, and with its new fortune it turned its own raft into a true floating city, MetaKey.
A Nomad Nation
The company also built the JackSuit, the first working armoured combat suit, from old military research, and later leased its patents to Militech. MetaCorp became a nomad nation because it supported the nomads through a long spell of scarce work. Many nomads were veterans of the Central American Wars, like Meta's own people, and MetaCorp poured billions of eurodollars into the nomad economy. Later, it used its knowledge of corporate red tape to outbid the other nations for exclusive shipping contracts, until it ruled shipping in North America.
Way of Life
MetaCorp works out of MetaKey, a mobile island city in the Gulf of Mexico, owned entirely by the company. No law applies there except MetaCorp's own, which allows everything but slavery and murder. The company often hires other nomad nations and packs, including as security for MetaKey.
Business
A shard found in Night City, Inside MetaCorp, describes the company from the outside. Unlike other nomads, who deal in smuggling and raiding, the Meta are strictly law abiding. MetaCorp is formally registered in the Western Corporate States and holds a majority stake in many shipping companies, among them DTR, which handles a large share of all transport in America. Its chief is Victoria Meta, the granddaughter of the founder, who inherited his steely gaze and his business mind.
Billboards around the city carry the DTR slogan: "We move things, so your business can grow. A member of the MetaCorp Family."
