Nomads

Nomads are the families who live on the road outside the cities, moving in convoys of trucks, cars and trailers. They smuggle, haul cargo and take on work no one in the city will do. Most city people look down on them, and the nomads look down on the city in return.

Families and Outcasts

The first nomads were farmers forced off their land by disasters, wars and the schemes of the corporations. They gathered in bigger and bigger groups in search of a better home, and what they saw on the road convinced them they were better off staying on the move. Today they are divided into seven great nations, such as the Aldecaldos, the Jodes and the Snake Nation, and each nation into clans and individual families.

The Aldecaldos are one of the oldest of those nations, and Saul Bright's pack has come to the Badlands near Night City looking for work. The Wraiths are outcasts thrown out of other families for terrible crimes. They raid convoys and towns and fight a long war with the Aldecaldos. Nomads call such outcasts the Raffen Shiv and see them as barely human.

Way of Life

Nomads travel with their whole families in search of work. They rebuilt cities and factories after the collapse of the old United States and helped build the maglev network. Some clans take seasonal work from corporations, never staying long in one place, while others work for local communities. Family, by blood or not, matters more to them than anything, and they live by a code of their own, loyal to family and clan above all.

Notes

Panam Palmer's story follows the Aldecaldos through the Badlands, and Dakota Smith hands out most of the nomad gigs. The Red Ocher family appears in the story of Biotechnica's experiments.
