The Raffen Shiv are outcast nomads, the most hated nomads of all. Other nomads see them as barely human, and calling a true nomad a raffen by mistake can start a fight. They are scavengers and killers who prey on the weak, far from the reach of the law. Once cast out, most of them keep living on the road, but nobody would call their groups families, not even as a joke.
History
The Outcasts
The nomad codes once listed reasons for throwing someone out of a family, such as refusing to share with the clan. Those rules seem to come from happier times. These days nomads are more often expelled for murder, rape, trafficking people, poisoning the water or betraying the clan. Such outcasts, renegades and traitors from every nomad family gather as the Raffen Shiv. They steal from, kill or enslave anyone they can trap. Nomad families send war parties to wipe them out wherever they are found.
The Wraiths
The largest group of Raffen is the Wraiths, who now rule the Badlands outside Night City and are often at war with the Aldecaldos. Many smaller Raffen groups have given up the open road and moved into the cities instead.
Way of Life
Raffen look much like any other booster gang, with plenty of chrome and heavy weapons. Their vehicles are built for combat. Their culture is oppressive: the stronger members abuse the weaker ones, for a reason or just for fun, and hangers-on are sometimes traded like cattle. Some groups are total cyberpsychos.
The Raffen Shiv prowl the Badlands, ambushing travellers, corporate convoys and, with special pleasure, other nomad camps. Corporations sometimes hire them anyway, because the Raffen will do any job, no matter how dirty, and usually for less money than any other mercs.
Jobs
The Raffen Shiv ambush Panam Palmer's crew in Ghost Town, where the nomad Nash turns out to be one of them. A garage in the Badlands fixes up their cars in the gig Big Pete's Got Big Problems.
