The Ash of War: Square Off is an Ash of War in Elden Ring that grants the Quality affinity and the Square Off skill. It becomes available partway through a run, in the Siofra River.
Square Off holds the straight sword level in a ready stance that costs no FP to hold. A normal attack from the stance steps in with an upward slash that breaks through an enemy's guard, while a strong attack performs a fast running thrust. The thrust deals around 40 stance damage, on par with a charged great hammer attack, and breaks most enemies' stance in two or three hits. It suits Quality builds with straight swords and is one of the strongest skills for the class.
Stats
It grants the Quality affinity and a Whetblade can switch it to Standard, Keen, Heavy, Fire, Flame Art, Lightning, Sacred, Magic, Cold, Poison, Blood or Occult. The skill costs no FP. It fits Straight Sword.
How to Get Ash of War: Square Off Guide
- Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab near a cliff edge north-northwest of the Worshippers' Woods Site of Grace in the Siofra River, in front of a large waterfall.
- Once obtained, it can be duplicated by trading Lost Ashes of War to Smithing Master Hewg at the Roundtable Hold.

Skill
The running thrust deals pierce damage, so landing it during an enemy's attack adds counter hit damage. The upward slash is the tool for shield users, since it drains huge amounts of guard stamina. Holding the stance for a moment first lets Rellana's Cameo boost both follow-ups, and the stance can be cancelled without spending FP. Both follow-ups can be parried.

- Square Off is the innate skill of the Longsword, Lordsworn's Straight Sword, Broadsword and several other straight swords.
