A Bear Pelt is the hide off any ordinary bear, and at 50 gold it is the most valuable common pelt in Skyrim outside the snow and cave varieties. It tans one for one into Leather and is one of the few hides with uses beyond the tanning rack.
Drops
Every ordinary bear drops one, including the bear in Unbound and any bear a spriggan has taken as a companion. Snow bears and cave bears drop their own varieties instead. Hunters and general goods merchants stock them from level 1.
Twenty-one guaranteed pelts sit across twelve locations. Broken Oar Grotto in Haafingar is far and away the richest at seven.
What Else They Are For
Ten bear pelts of any variety are needed for the quest Grin and Bear It. One is also among the four ingredients for a Spell Tome: Conjure Flame Atronach at the Atronach Forge, and with Hearthfire installed they furnish a house.
Tanning is done at a tanning rack, which needs no perk and grants no Smithing experience. The value is in the weight saved: a bag of pelts is heavy and the Leather it becomes is not.
