The Devourer is a Necrophage and a particularly dangerous kind of Rotfiend. It has an endless hunger for human flesh. A pack of Devourers haunts the abandoned town of Toderas in Velen.
Lore
Devourers share the look of their Rotfiend cousins. Both resemble rotting human bodies stripped of their skin. Vesemir of the Wolf School opens the Rotfiend bestiary entry with a dry joke about the smell. The stench of rot gives these creatures away long before they are seen, and it gave the Rotfiend its name.
Devourers and Rotfiends were once rare. In this age of endless war and violence, they have become a true plague. They gather above all around battlefields and in places struck by disease.
Behaviour
Devourers feed mostly on carrion, but they attack the living at times too. They feed in large groups, which makes them a real danger to lone travelers. They are also very fast, quick enough to outrun a horse at full gallop. They feed at twilight and through the night, and they are far more dangerous after dark than by day.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Necrophage Oil.
The rotting body of a Devourer is full of gas. The gas is poisonous even to witchers, who shrug off most other toxins. It also burns very easily, so a spark or a careless Igni can set off an explosion. Like Rotfiends, Devourers blow up when their health runs low. When one begins to shake out of control, back away at once. The blast also hurts any other monsters standing close by.
