Insectoids

Insectoids are the many-legged, armored monsters of the witcher world. They range from the Arachasae of damp woods to the Giant Centipedes that burrow beneath Toussaint. Most of them share venom: Arachasae, Endrega Workers and Kikimore Warriors all poison their prey. Thick, shell-like armor also shields many of them from the sword.

Some came from far away. Arachasae originally lived in the far south, then spread north over the decades into swamps and damp forests. Arachnomorphs appeared after the Conjunction and are distant cousins of the common spider. They keep to deep caves and waterlogged swamps. Giant Centipedes share the ground under Toussaint with Shaelmaars. They feed on the small creatures that eat Shaelmaar dung.

Endregas and Kikimores live in large colonies that serve a queen and are split into castes. Endrega Workers build the nests and tend the eggs. Endrega Warriors defend the borders. Endrega Drones guard the territory until autumn, when the strongest fertilize the queen. Kikimore Warriors command swarms of Kikimore Workers, and a swarm falls apart once its Warrior dies. Among the Arachasae, the Venomous Arachas carries a poison so strong that a few drops kill a grown man.

Witchers coat their silver swords with Insectoid Oil against the whole species. They drink Golden Oriole before facing Arachas or Endrega venom. The right Sign depends on the creature. Igni burns Kikimores, and Yrden pins a Giant Centipede so it can neither shield itself nor burrow away. Axii stops an Arachnomorph for a moment.
