Specters

Specters are spirits that stay in the world after their bodies die, along with phantoms born of curses and dark deeds. Most are bound to a place, an object or an old tragedy. They haunt fields, roads and abandoned houses, and they can lose their solid form to escape a witcher's blade.

Noonwraiths are the spirits of young women who died violent deaths just before their weddings. They wander sunlit fields at midday. A Noonwraith is often held in this world by an object of deep meaning, such as a wedding ring or a torn veil. Nightwraiths are pale and withered, and they stalk fields and meadows by night. The Devil by the Well in White Orchard, the White Lady near Farcorners and Jenny o' the Woods outside Midcopse each began as a woman who died a tragic death.

Not every Specter was once human. Hyms attach themselves to people who have committed some terrible crime, and they stay invisible to everyone else. Barghests are ghostly dogs that stalk the roads at night, born of a curse or a build-up of ill will. Plague Maidens walk the land when plague sweeps through a region. The Wraith from the Painting is the restless spirit of Iris von Everec.

Witchers coat their silver swords with Specter Oil. Yrden traps a Specter, and a Moon Dust bomb forces it back into solid form. Only then can the blade hit. Quen guards against wraiths that vanish and strike from behind. Noonwraiths are much weaker at night and Nightwraiths much weaker by day, so the hour of the fight matters. Some fights are won by breaking whatever ties the spirit to its haunt.
