Sylvia Anna, called Syanna by those close to her, is the older sister of Duchess Anna Henrietta of Toussaint. She was born during an eclipse and was believed to carry the Curse of the Black Sun. Her parents sent her into exile. Geralt finds her at Dun Tynne castle during the quest Capture the Castle, where she is revealed as the mind behind the Beast of Beauclair murders.
Lore
Syanna is the daughter of a duke and the sister of a duchess. Her birth came at a bad moment, during an eclipse. Many feared the Curse of the Black Sun, which was said to strike girls of ruling families born at such a time. Some claimed the curse filled its victims with cruelty and a wish to kill. Geralt has serious doubts that the curse is real.
Syanna's parents believed in it. They judged her too dangerous to stay at court and forced her into exile. Syanna fled to Nazair and soon vanished as if from the face of the earth. She was declared missing and presumed dead. Anna Henrietta, full of love for her sister, mourned her for years.
Story
A killer called the Beast of Beauclair is murdering people in Toussaint. In Capture the Castle, Geralt storms Dun Tynne castle to find Syanna, who is thought to be held there. Inside, he meets the wounded lord of the castle, Roderick. Syanna persuaded the old knight to open his castle to a gang of bandits. Geralt fights his way to the keep with two higher vampires, Regis and Dettlaff. There he finds Syanna and learns the truth. She is also Rhena, the young woman whom Dettlaff loved and believed kidnapped. Syanna sent Dettlaff the names of the victims. She also had a Cintrian steal Sangreal wine and the ducal jewel for her. Dettlaff barely holds back his rage. He sets a time and place to meet her, and leaves.
Syanna wants nothing to do with her sister and will not even speak to her. In Beyond Hill and Dale..., Geralt learns that Syanna has been hidden in the Land of a Thousand Fables. The mage Artorius Vigo made this fairytale world for the ducal daughters when they were children. His spell has since grown wild and dangerous. Geralt finds Syanna there, and the two join forces to escape. Syanna knows that the way out lies among the clouds. They gather magic beans, climb the beanstalk and defeat the giant at the top. On the way, Geralt may get a magic ribbon for Syanna. Through their talks, Syanna admits that her murder plot is revenge on the people who forced her into exile.
In Tesham Mutna, Geralt may bring Syanna to the meeting with Dettlaff. If he does, the vampire tries to kill her. If Syanna has the ribbon, it carries her to a safe place, the palace dungeons. Without it, Dettlaff kills her without a second thought.
If Syanna survives, Pomp and Strange Circumstance follows. Regis believes that Syanna planned five murders from the start. Geralt and Regis learn that the fifth victim was to be Anna Henrietta herself. If Geralt visits Syanna in her cell and talks her into forgiving her sister, the two quarrel openly before the court. Years of hidden hurt come out, and Syanna waits for her sentence in peace. If Geralt does not change her mind, Syanna pretends to make peace with her sister. During the embrace, she stabs Anna Henrietta with a hairpin and kills her. A ducal guardsman cuts Syanna down a moment later. The two sisters are laid to rest in the same crypt.
Relationships
Anna Henrietta is Syanna's younger sister. She loved and mourned her, and Syanna came to hate her. Dettlaff van der Eretein is the higher vampire who loved her, and whom she used as her weapon. Roderick, the lord of Dun Tynne, fell under her spell.
