Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, known simply as Regis, is a higher vampire and an old friend of Geralt. He is a learned man and a skilled alchemist, and he gave up drinking blood long ago. Geralt meets him again in Toussaint, where Regis helps him hunt the Beast of Beauclair. He is one of the main characters of Blood and Wine.
Lore
Years before the events of the game, Regis joined Geralt's band of travelers in the search for Ciri. Over many adventures, he proved a loyal friend, the kind one can trust with one's life. The journey ended in tragedy for him. The sorcerer Vilgefortz killed Regis and reduced him to nothing more than a wet stain. Geralt saw him die with his own eyes.
That was not Regis's first death. As a young vampire, he was something of a free spirit and drank far too much blood. This way of life ended when angry villagers butchered him. Regenerating from that took him fifty years, which is almost no time at all for an immortal. Once he was whole again, he gave up drinking blood for good.
Regis also came back from his death at Vilgefortz's hands. The one who helped him regenerate was another higher vampire, Dettlaff van der Eretein. Regis came to Toussaint to find his friend Dettlaff, who seemed to be in serious trouble.
Story
In Blood Run, Geralt chases the killer of a knight through the streets of Beauclair. The trail ends in an old dockside warehouse, where the killer springs a trap. At the crucial moment, Regis appears and stops the fight. Geralt is amazed to see his old friend alive. They hear a crowd approaching, so Regis leaves before anyone sees him. He asks Geralt to meet him at the Mère-Lachaiselongue Cemetery.
In La Cage au Fou, Geralt finds Regis in a crypt at the cemetery. Regis has made it a comfortable home and set up a well-equipped alchemy workshop. He reveals that the Beast of Beauclair is his friend Dettlaff, a higher vampire. Since Dettlaff once saved his life, Regis insists on a peaceful solution. To find Dettlaff, Regis brews a potion called Resonance. One ingredient is the saliva of a spotted wight, so Regis sends Geralt to hunt one down. The last ingredient is the blood of a higher vampire in a state of great fury. To get it, Regis takes Geralt to Tesham Mutna, an old place where vampires once raised people like cattle. Regis has Geralt lock him in a hanging cage. Geralt then lures in monsters and slaughters them, and the blood drives Regis nearly mad with desire. Geralt drinks the finished potion and sees Dettlaff with a young bootblack.
In Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away, Geralt and Regis find the bootblack and follow his lead to a shuttered toy shop. A letter there shows that Dettlaff is being blackmailed. Someone holds his lover hostage and forces him to kill. Regis stays at the shop to wait for his friend.
In The Man from Cintra, Regis turns up at Orianna's Mandragora soiree in the company of Dettlaff. Orianna turns out to be an old friend of his. In Capture the Castle, Regis and Dettlaff join Geralt in storming Dun Tynne. There they learn that Syanna, the duchess's sister, is both Dettlaff's lover and the mind behind the murders.
When Dettlaff unleashes his vampires on Beauclair in The Night of Long Fangs, Regis can fight at Geralt's side through the city. He advises a peaceful way out. Geralt then chooses one of two paths. In Beyond Hill and Dale, Regis helps Geralt enter the Land of a Thousand Fables to find Syanna. In What Lies Unseen, Regis helps Geralt meet the Unseen Elder, an ancient vampire who paralyzes Regis at once. Either path ends at Tesham Mutna.
At Tesham Mutna, Dettlaff flies into a rage in most outcomes, and Geralt defeats him. Only another vampire can truly kill a higher vampire. Regis makes the hardest choice of his life and kills his friend. He decides that Dettlaff could no longer bear his failure to fit into this world. If Dettlaff kills Syanna and Geralt lets him go, Regis follows his friend instead. He hopes to help Dettlaff find his balance again.
In Pomp and Strange Circumstance, Regis goes with Geralt to the tailor's before the award ceremony. He cannot shake the thought that Syanna planned five murders, not four. At the end, the two friends meet at Regis's crypt to share his mandrake spirit and look back on events.
Relationships
Geralt and Regis are old companions from the search for Ciri. Each trusts the other with his life. Their friendship survives Regis's death and years of separation.
Dettlaff van der Eretein is Regis's close friend and the one who brought him back to life. That debt makes the hunt for the Beast painful for Regis. Orianna is an old friend of his from among the vampires of Toussaint.
