The Higher Vampire is an extremely rare and powerful kind of Vampire. Higher vampires look, think and act like humans. Instead of hiding in distant forests, they live in cities, where their lives seem completely normal.
Lore
"Men, the polite ones, at least, would call me a monster." The words belong to Emiel Regis, a higher vampire. Only a shared thirst for blood links higher vampires to their primitive, bat-like cousins, such as Ekimmaras, Alps and Katakans. Higher vampires have far more in common with humans. They share human looks, human intelligence and human ways of behaving.
Even a witcher cannot spot one at once. A witcher's medallion stays perfectly still when a higher vampire is near. Yet one great difference sets them apart from men: higher vampires are immortal. The people who have fought one and lived can be counted on one hand.
Luckily for witchers, not all of them are a danger to humans. They enjoy the taste of blood, but they do not need to drink it to survive. Some have given up feeding on humans altogether and harm no one. Others give in to their desires.
Behaviour
Higher vampires live among humans and blend in with them. Daylight, holy water, religious symbols and garlic do them no harm.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Vampire Oil, and use Igni at every opening.
A higher vampire is a terrible foe. It has incredible strength and can bend men and animals to its will. It can turn invisible and change into a giant bat. On top of that, it is nearly impossible to kill. Even an experienced monster slayer should think twice before taking such a contract. That holds even if half a kingdom and a princess's hand are on offer.

The higher vampire Dettlaff van der Eretein is the Beast of Beauclair, the killer hunted through the main quests of Toussaint. He is first fought in Blood Run, after a chase through the streets of Beauclair. Regis, an old friend of the witcher and a higher vampire himself, steps in to stop that fight. The hunt for Dettlaff ends at the Tesham Mutna ruins in the main quest Tesham Mutna.
