Dettlaff van der Eretein is a Higher Vampire, one of the most terrifying creatures the world has ever known. Toussaint knows the vampire as the Beast of Beauclair. Dettlaff is the killer at the heart of the main story in Toussaint.
Lore
Some higher vampires live among men easily and quietly. A few even earn the respect and admiration of their neighbors. Yet even the most civilized vampire is very dangerous when provoked, and Dettlaff was far from civilized.
In Beauclair, a string of people died at the hands of a mysterious killer. Duchess Anna Henrietta summoned a witcher to hunt the Beast down.
Syanna, the duchess's sister, had been Dettlaff's lover, and she had betrayed the vampire. Dettlaff threatened Beauclair unless Syanna was handed over. When she was not, the vampire carried out the threat. A plague of lesser vampires fell on Beauclair in the night.
Behaviour
Like every higher vampire, Dettlaff can turn into fog and wrap around a foe. In that form, watch out for magic puddles on the ground and attacks from the air. Dettlaff can also become invisible and regain strength in the middle of a fight. Higher vampires are immortal, so they never fear for their lives in battle. As a result, Dettlaff takes every risk.
Weaknesses
Dettlaff is immune to bombs that only cause a status effect. Aard and Igni are the most useful Signs. They are best saved for the moments when the vampire is on the ground and open to attack.
The final fight comes in three stages. In two-legged form, Dettlaff strikes in surprising ways, so stay very alert. The main weapons are razor-sharp claws, used with great strength and precision. Dettlaff also handles human weapons with rare skill. In this stage the vampire dashes in, strikes and dodges away. Roll aside from each dash, get behind Dettlaff and strike.
Once wounded, Dettlaff takes a winged form. In the air the vampire cannot be hurt at all. The powerful wings stun foes with almost no effort. When Dettlaff gathers a swarm of bats, run far away and dodge the wave as it comes. After a dive, Dettlaff stays on the ground for a few seconds. That is the moment for Aard, Igni and hard blows.
In the last stage, the fight moves into a vision of the inside of Dettlaff's chest. Pulsing hearts hang on the walls, and blood clones of Dettlaff attack. Killing a clone does no harm to the real vampire. Destroy the hearts instead, fending off the clones between blows.

Dettlaff appears in four main quests in Toussaint. The Beast of Toussaint follows the trail of murders to the palace gardens. There the knight Milton de Peyrac-Peyran was hiding during a game of Hunt the Hare. Milton is found dead in a greenhouse, with the murderer standing over the body. Blood Run is the chase through the streets of Beauclair that follows. The killer is cornered in an old warehouse, and a duel begins. In that duel the vampire teleports around and strikes from behind. Regis, an old friend of the witcher and a higher vampire himself, steps in and stops the fight before it ends.
The Night of Long Fangs covers the attack on Beauclair. To reach Dettlaff, the witcher can free Syanna or seek out one of the ancient vampires with Orianna's help.
The story ends in Tesham Mutna, at the Tesham Mutna Ruins. If the Unseen Elder forces Dettlaff to come, the vampire attacks at once. If Syanna is brought along, Dettlaff tries to kill her. With the magic ribbon from the Little Flint girl, she is carried to safety and the fight begins. Without the ribbon, Syanna dies. Dettlaff can then be fought or allowed to leave, and the vampire keeps the promise to stay away from humans. Syanna's death sends the witcher to prison in Burlap is the New Stripe. When Dettlaff falls in battle, Regis ends the vampire's life for good.
