Grand Theft Auto VI is an open-world action-adventure game from Rockstar Games. It is set in Leonida, a fictional American state modelled on Florida. Vice City is the main city of the state and the heart of the game. The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple who work as a team. Both of them are playable, and play can switch between the pair. Beyond the city, Leonida runs from tropical islands and swamps to industrial towns and northern forests.

Story

Jason and Lucia have always known that the odds are stacked against them. An easy score goes wrong and drags them into far deeper trouble. They end up on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America. A criminal conspiracy stretches across the whole state of Leonida. To make it out alive, the pair must rely on each other more than ever.

Lucia learned to fight from her father almost as soon as she could walk. Fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary. Sheer luck got her out, and she now plans to make only smart moves. She wants the good life her mother has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City. Jason grew up around grifters and crooks, then joined the Army to leave his troubled teens behind. After his service he drifted to the Keys and worked for local drug runners. Meeting Lucia could be the best or the worst thing that ever happened to him. A life together could offer both of them a way out. Their relationship sits at the centre of the story.

The pair work their way through the criminal world of Leonida one job at a time. They make a pick-up for Boobie Ike in a building run by a gang. Brian Heder hands them shady work that has to be done that same night. They drive the getaway for the bank robber Raul Bautista while the police give chase. They also work as security for a property developer at a fancy party.

Gameplay

The whole state of Leonida forms one open world. Jason and Lucia are both playable characters throughout Leonida. Outside missions, control can switch freely between the two of them. The switch works even when the pair are far apart in different parts of the state. The pair work side by side during robberies, escapes and gunfights. The partner not under control joins in, shooting alongside and helping with robberies. Some jobs call for only one of them. Crime ranges from store robberies and car theft to large heists.

Robberies hit liquor stores, gas stations and diners, often with masks on. Outfits and masks can be changed on the fly from a selection wheel. Cars can be stolen by smashing a window or by using a slim jim on the lock. Stolen goods can be sold to a local fence. They can also be stored in a stash box at a garage or a safehouse.

The wanted level returns and can climb as high as six stars. A crime needs a witness or an alarm before the police hear about it. Police recognise the pair by their faces, their clothes, their car and the fact that they travel together. A change of car or clothes makes the couple harder to track. Splitting up also lowers what the police know about them. Police markers stay off the mini map, so a Focus ability is used to spot officers. Red stars mean the police are searching the area without an active chase.

Each protagonist has a Criminal Profile that tracks how they behave as criminals. The profile reacts when a crime goes further than it needs to, especially when this happens again and again. Kind acts count too, such as stopping to pet a dog.

Gunfights use free aim and cover, with weapons picked up from the ground. A slow-motion focus mode picks out the weak spots of an enemy. Enemies can be wounded or knocked out instead of killed. Weapons carry brand names, such as the Girardi ES9 pistol, the Klose K17 pistol and the Hawk & Little Morgan revolver.

Vehicles range from the Vapid Ganado pickup of Jason to the Grotti Cheetah sports car. Other rides include the Dinka Enduro motorcycle, the Crest Kayak and the Shitzu Squalo boat. Mod shops change interiors, rims, liveries and the whole style of a car. Convertibles drop their roofs while on the move. The mini map shows buildings in three dimensions.

Safehouses give Jason and Lucia a place to live and rest between jobs. Homes are interactive, with drinks in the fridge and adverts on the TV. Garages hold vehicles, weapons and stolen goods that wait to be sold on. Each personal garage has a weapon locker for changing loadouts. Jason and Lucia can change their hairstyles, outfits and tattoos. Jason can style his facial hair, and Lucia can change her makeup and nails.

Leonida is full of things to do away from the story. Side activities include basketball, gym workouts, scuba diving, fishing, kayaking and base jumping. Airboats, jet skis, mini golf, billiards and zoo visits fill the free time of the pair. Street racing, off-road racing and backyard wrestling add rougher thrills. Hunting and off-road trails fill the wild north of the state. Nightlife plays a large part, from packed nightclubs to strip clubs. Jason and Lucia can drink and dance together, and they can hold hands. A context menu lets them greet people, talk and pet dogs.

Social media runs through the world, and locals film and livestream whatever happens around them. Some influencers even livestream from the back seat during a police chase. The radio offers the biggest and widest range of stations in the series. Stations include Flash FM, Cocoteo FM, Back Country Radio, AfroBank FM, The Chamber 106.6 and Dirty South Classics. On-demand podcasts sit alongside the radio. Both play on foot through headphones and earbuds linked to a smartphone. The electronic duo Justice composed the original score.

Leonida

Leonida is a sun-soaked state with the nickname the Goodtime State. The world map of Leonida runs from neon city streets to wetlands, keys and forests. Its regions are Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Vice City is the main city of Leonida and is modelled on Miami. The map is about twice the size of the one in Grand Theft Auto V. It is also denser and more detailed, with more to interact with.

The main characters are the protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The supporting characters are Brian Heder, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez and Raul Bautista.
