The Highwayman is a side job that tells the story of Josie Alcazar and James Ito, two young lovers caught up with the Tyger Claws. It has no giver and no marker on the map: it starts in a garage behind the Gun-O-Rama shop in Rancho Coronado, or with a shard found on Josie's body. The trail leads through Japantown and Heywood to a stolen motorbike hidden in Maelstrom territory.
Story
Another Missing Person
The journal sighs over another missing person in Night City. Once the police would have searched for someone like her. Now her fate is in V's hands.
Behind the Gun-O-Rama gun shop on Woodhaven Street, a garage marked with a ghost horse decal stands open. Inside lies a scrapped Brennan motorbike, and a terminal holds messages from someone called James. A photo of a young couple sits on the desk. Johnny guesses the photo was taken in Japantown, where young people go on dates, and remarks that it always starts so cute and rarely ends that way.
James
James Ito sits on the same bench as in the photo, at a plaza in Japantown with a 24/7 stand, south along the waterfront road. He tells V that Josie fled when things got dangerous, taking the red metro line south.
Josie
At the Ebunike metro station in Heywood, a trail of dried blood leads past the drop point into an alley, where Josie lies dead behind a dumpster. Her shard, "Bad news", tells how she died, and where she hid the motorbike she stole from a Tyger Claws boss: near the All Foods factory, in Maelstrom territory, by a ghost horse. Johnny is angry: a pretty name, a cute girl, an ugly end. He wants V to have a word with the man from the photo.
The Bike
Back in Japantown, V confronts James with what V has found. How it ends depends on V's words. The bike waits in a garage across the street from the fast travel point near the All Foods factory, under another ghost horse. The code is the date James and Josie met.

Choices
James
Answering James with "So you had a choice..." keeps the talk peaceful, and he is left to live with his guilt. The other answer makes him attack, and V can avenge Josie.
The Order
The steps can be done in any order. V can find Josie's body first and confront James straight away. V can even open the garage with the code and take the bike without finding Josie or meeting James, skipping the story.
Rewards
Completing The Highwayman rewards ARCH Nazaré "Itsumade".
The Nazare "Itsumade" motorbike waits in the garage behind the code 0214. It can be claimed at any time.
Notes
- The job was first meant to be solved with a printed city guide from the collector's edition. That idea was dropped, which is why the job has no marker on the map.
- After the job, the graffiti of James and Josie disappears from the bench, and James never comes back to it.
- The bike claimed in the garage and the one that can be summoned later are two separate copies.
