The Space in Between is the main job in which V and Judy Álvarez visit Fingers, a ripperdoc on Jig-Jig Street in Japantown, to learn where Evelyn Parker was taken. It follows Automatic Love and leads into Disasterpiece. Fingers's clinic serves the sex workers of the street, and getting him to talk can be done gently or by force.

Story

Jig-Jig Street

Woodman pointed the search to Fingers, a ripperdoc on Jig-Jig Street. Johnny has had enough of joyhouses. In the journal he says that the trick with such places is to leave while the going is good, because staring at fake smiles for too long only shows the misery behind them. He thinks the chances of finding Evelyn are close to zero, and he wants a drink if they fail.

V can call Judy before heading out. Either way, she is waiting outside Fingers's clinic. Some thugs stand at the door. They can be beaten, talked round or scared off, and a Streetkid V can settle things with a word.

The Clinic

Fingers's waiting room is full of clients. V and Judy can wait their turn, bribe the patients to skip the queue, hack the computer to move up the list, or sneak into the surgery another way. Fingers is a strange man with clammy hands and an obsession with the human body, but he is the ripperdoc the street relies on.

In the surgery, V and Judy confront Fingers about Evelyn. He tries to wriggle out of it, and he is rude to Judy. With enough pressure, he gives up what he knows about Evelyn. The trail leads on to an illegal braindance, and the search continues in Disasterpiece. If V hurts Fingers, he never works as a ripperdoc for V again.

Outside the Clinic

Call Judy if desired to give her an update.
Go to Jig-Jig Street and find Fingers's clinic.
Talk to the thugs at the door. Fight them, talk past them, intimidate them with enough Body, or use the Streetkid answer.
Or avoid them: force open the side door, or climb the dumpster to a window on the upper floor.
Or claim to be a sex worker with a broken implant who needs to see Fingers.

Inside

Enter the clinic and talk to Judy in the waiting room.
Sit and talk to the clients in the waiting room if desired.
Find a way into Fingers's office. Wait for the surgery to end, bribe the patients, hack the computer to jump the queue, use the grate behind the waiting room window with enough Technical Ability, or force the surgery door with enough Body.

Fingers

Talk to Fingers and question him about Evelyn.
Back Judy up when he insults her, for example by threatening him with the Mox and telling him not to speak to her that way.
Get the information, by talk or by force.

Choices

Fingers can be handled calmly or roughly. Talking him down, with Judy's help, keeps him alive and open for business. Hurting him or punching him still gets the answer, but he then refuses to serve V as a ripperdoc. As every ripperdoc sells the same kinds of implants, losing him costs little.

Siding with Judy against Fingers's insults matters for her storyline. It builds the bond that can later lead to a romance.

Completing The Space in Between rewards Cottonmouth (missable).

Tips

Points in Body make the thugs at the door easy to get past. With a high Body score, the option to force the surgery door may not appear, so another way in is needed.
