Flametal Ore forms on the backs of the Lavaiathans that drift through the lava seas of the Ashlands. It shows as glowing veins in a crust of cooled rock.

How to Get It

Mine the veins with a Black Metal Pickaxe or better, since nothing softer will chip them. The catch is that the vein sits on something alive. Your swings can disturb the Lavaiathan beneath, and once roused it sinks back under the lava, taking every node you have not broken with it. Work quickly and keep an escape route off the rock. The ore will not go through wooden portals, only through a stone portal. If you would rather fight for it than mine it, Charred chests inside the Ashlands fortresses hold some as well.

Notes

The old Flametal came from Glowing Metal Piles and was smelted into Flametal in a Blast Furnace.
That old Flametal Ore now converts to "Ancient ore" and stays unusable. Its ID is FlametalOre, while newly mined ore has the ID FlametalOreNew.
Like other metals, Flametal Ore cannot go through a regular portal. It can travel through the Portal - Stone.
Smelting it into Flametal burns Coal. The Blast Furnace uses one coal every 15 seconds and takes 30 seconds per bar, so you spend two coal for every bar that comes out. It holds 20 coal and 10 ore at a time, and it stops working if the smoke above it has nowhere to go.
